Been trying to find a good consistent place to go to for locals for Melee/PM tournaments and havent had much luck. Anyone have any places in mind?

Check if there's a local Facebook page, also make sure to check the regional zone sub-forum for your area (which I've linked here)

Depends how far up North Jersey you're talking about.
If you're completely up there, like the Princeton area there should be Jersey Japes(or I think it's Jungle Japes? Idk)
But if you're more down like towards the middle there's Salty Joystick in Vineland
If you want more tournaments though, just go here https://www.facebook.com/groups/justsmashing/
It's a tournament series based in Jersey.

North Jersey currently has: 'Hitbox Arena' in Kinnelon. They mass produce tournaments and hold several smash events a week, but as a result few top players go and they are slightly over priced. 'Smash Night @ The Chocolate Factory' is held in Union City on Thursdays and they run several games. Smash Madness is a melee monthly in Kearny held at Gamer's Edge (next one is this Saturday)

Central NJ has Jersey Japes North (Green Brook, on hiatus for summer) and Jersey Japes South in Princeton. Also NJ's longest running (continual) series, The Break Biweekly, in Dunellen every other Friday. Traditionally the Break is the one with the highest average skill level and most top players in attendance. These three all have threads on smashboards with more info.

I'd suggest joining "NJ SSBM' which is the Facebook hub for all NJ events. I'm in the process of collecting info on NJ locals and will have it all on the NJ master thread soon. The Just Smashing series and several other south jersey ones are a bit far for north jersey players.
