Hey there fellow smashers! Krauserlols here, i have been a fan of Project Melee for some time now and i got to say really good job guys, seriously its amazing. I do have my own complains about it but thats for another thread. No what i want to ask right now is that like many of us i have always wanted to create my own games, to show people my ideas and create worlds and so on but i know that we should start small and grow from there.

To start i would like to use Project Melee's basics to mess around with, or mod brawl in general. But i have no idea where to start, i would love if some of the Modders of this comunity could give me some advices and maybe recomend some programs to use for modding, free if posible cause i dont have access to dollars on my country, well i do but its not the cheapest thing in the world. From simple skins for our fav characters to complete reskins or modifying an existing character. One step at a time.

Thanks in advance.

you'll need brawl box, The smash attack program, and brawl managers. Since 98% of the people on these fourms are selfish *****. You won't likely get a answer back on how, and they'll tell you to look it up. I myself is still learning. Good luck

This list should give a pretty good idea of what programs are used for modding, but I think it may be a bit outdated.
(If this link gives a 503 error or something similar, just try refreshing in a few minutes. The website tends to go down a lot)

The main program you need is Brawlbox. It is needed for nearly every kind of modding in some way. It can change portraits, icons, menus, stages, music, and more. The newest version is 0.76b, although I don't think it can edit move sets properly, and you'll need 0.67b if you want to edit characters moves properly through it, which you can find here.

Another option for editing move sets is PSA, or Project Smash Attacks. It's ability to modify moves is similar to Brawlbox, although it does not show articles I often find it changing file size too much, so for the most part you need to be a lot more careful with it than Brawlbox. I personally use both, but for the most part its a matter of preference.

Super Sawndz! is usually used for editing character's sounds. It can often be difficult to work with, but it's probably the only program you need for this.

The only programs that would cost money that are used for modding would be 3ds Max or Maya, which are used for modelling and animation. However, I believe you could get student versions of them for free, and there are alternatives, such as using Blender for modelling or Brawlbox for animation, although they tend to be more difficult to get working.

I hear about Brawl Managers a lot, but I have very little experience with them and can't help you there.

For the most part, you should be able to find a lot of tutorials and resources on KC-MM, the websites the previous links go to. The main problem though is that it tends to gives 503 errors often, but just waiting a little bit and then refreshing seems to work most the time.

This is just some general information on what programs most use for modding the game. If you want to know more for specific areas of modding, I can try to help, although I am very unskilled in many fields.

Nice job for calling out a forums that's made up of 90% consumers and 10% producers.

As for OP, you're better off looking up tutorials on KCMM (Kitty Corp Meow Mix). A bunch of tutorials are outdated, but you should be able to get them to work with the newer programs.

First you should go get Brawl Box! You can open up .pac files and mess around with textures. Try exporting/replacing different textures and things. I took Toon Link's shield, exported the texture and using Photoshop (or Gimp, or https://pixlr.com/editor/) I changed it to his shield texture from Phantom Hourglass. That was my first mod, haha. Something that simple is enough to get you started.

If you need to start even more basic with Brawl modding, I would recommend trying to replace music, then stages, then character skins in that order. Lots of resources out there to help you get started with that!

I think that's a pretty big generalization and really unfair. Lots of folks are HERE for help and genuinely don't know. Lots of the ones who do are sick of answering the same questions over and over or are too busy working on their own stuff for us to use.

@ oddzxc oddzxc if you don't like the People om forum then don't be here. Right now, you're really just spreading a bad vibe.

Welcome to the modding comunity :) It takes a lot of work to get into modding, but people are in general pretty nice if you have a specific problem or question. Drogoth beat me to the kc-mm forum suggestion. They have a lot more tutorials than here. I do believe i posted some links to another thread lile this. I'll edit this post if i can find them. Also I think I watched a lot of wacky alpacas youtube tutorials when i was getting started.
And to repeat everyone else: brawlbox is your best friend. Also the stage/costume/SSS managers.
Happy modding for now :)
