Noob Jumping Question

I'm relatively new to practicing Melee, and I've noticed a seeming discrepancy between my jumping ability when knocked off stage. I'm not really sure how the jump/double jump/jump reset system works, so I figured I'd ask to hope for some clarification.

I've been practicing Marth, and it seems that when I get knocked off stage after a double jump I no longer have any jumps until I land or catch the ledge, but sometimes I get knocked off after a single jump and it seems I am unable to jump at all as well. When do jumps reset exactly, and how does the system work for regaining jumps when hit (if at all)? I can't quite figure out the consistency of it.

unless there's something really weird here that i just don't know:

you get one ground jump and one midair jump which needs to be refreshed by landing, grabbing the ledge or being grabbed.

odds are if you feel like you jump once, get hit, and can no longer mid-air jump, you're most likely burning your midair jump somehow just before getting hit and not realizing it.

Thanks for the reply. That's how I thought it worked, I suppose I might be burning a jump without realizing it. I think it's also possible that I get hit just off the ground and then immediately jump to evade (which I suppose burns the mid-air jump) and expect to have a jump left when getting knocked off stage.
