Non-Taunts on D-pad in 3.5 or later?

So one thing I was thinking about when I first picked up brawl was having the D-pad set to useful stuff such as special to make easy b-reversals without giving up the C-stick, or attacks so I could do the fast fall Nair trick without having to change the C-stick.

However, the D-pad only allows you to change things to taunts. I think it would be nice to have the option to use the D-pad for other control options. Idk if it is something PMBR could actually do and I am sure that if they haven't already started it probably wouldn't happen until the next update even if they really want to make it happen.

Possible ideas: Move the left stick controls to D-pad. Use D-pad as basically a second C-stick (adding whatever functionality it would normally have). Allowing south paw controls with C-stick being move and D-pad/left stick being smash, ect...

Again, no idea how feasible something like this is, but it would be nice to see for those who want more control over their controller customization and it kinda sucks that people with taunt on X, R, or L need 4 extra taunt buttons as it essentially pointless, when they could have real function.

Considering the awkward position of the d-pad I don't see how this would be super useful anyway, at least without moving your hands into an awkward position.

Sorry:(

I think with practice the d-pad could be quite useful.

As much as I love the gamecube controller, it is not perfect. In fact it is quite whack in certain ways. Muscle memory could make the d-pad quite useful. Mastering all the regular advanced techniques makes you do some pretty unorthodox stuff with the controller already.

If you give smashers an option, they will use it. Time and time again this has been proven to be true. I like the idea of d-pad options.

Can you even access the D-pad if you use a claw grip?

You most certainly can with either thumb.

One unintended result I have notice from using the 20XX hack pack Melee mod is that I am getting quite proficient with the d-pad. For example when I practice ledge teching, I have to quickly press d-pad left every time I miss one to reset. I'm getting 20XX d-pad skills.

Also, there is Smash DI which you could use with the D-pad if you wanted to keep your right hand free and pressing the D-pad over repeatedly would be easier than spamming a direction on the c-stick.
