Non-Special Aerial Projectiles

Regarding Mega Man's hard knuckle and mega buster and Villager's slingshot--maybe even Wii Fit Trainer's soccer ball spike, although I'm sure that move is a special rather than a standard aerial--have we seen these types of moves before? I know projectiles exist, but the only ones I can think of are special moves (Sheik's needles, Peach's turnips, Samus's missiles and charge shot, Olimar's Pikmin, et cetera). Does anyone know definitely or not if we've seen this yet? If not, is there any discussion to be had on how it might affect gameplay? For instance, we know that special projectiles and standard attacks can clash/cancel out--would that same principle apply to non-special projectiles?

they already broke tradition with Snake's up-smash and down-smash

it'll definitely affect the play-style of the character. Like villager's slingshot looks like a back-air, so he won't have a reliable standard back-air for regular/practical use.

we'll just have to wait and see how it acts when connected with other attacks/tools/etc

good on you for posting this thread.

the closest thing I can think of is some of mewtwo's, fox's, and falcos grabs that do use projectiles (also snake). as far as aerials having actual projectiles, its something entirely new. and I think its a great for new characters so that they have options for original moves rather than "taking" a move from an already existing character. new hitboxes and move animations can really benefit from this.

Any aspect of a character will affect gameplay. Whether projectiles are is assigned to the A button or the B button (specials) is irrelevant, just changing up precedent. Still feels weird, though.

There's Olimar's F-smash and Snake's U-smash, but his D-smash isn't really a projectile. The closest I can think of aerial wise could be considered Charizard's F-aerial, since he breaths fire, though it travels a very short distance. Also, Ike's U-special has him throwing his sword up in the air.

I can imagine a fire breathing character using a short ranged fire ball as a non-special move, sort of like Olimar's F-smash. I pesonally think any non-special projectile should be harder to use in comparison to special move projectiles, depending on how quickly the move can be executed and if any of the same character's special moves has a realiable projectile.

One idea I came up with is if Dry Bowser got in as double character (Bowser/DryBowser, like Samus/ZeroSuitSamus) he could breath a blue fire ball upwards for his U-aerial, that explodes after traveling a short distance. That's just an example of what could be done for non-aerial projectiles.

Not sure if Zelda's u-air and Ivysaur's u-air/d-air count.

There's also G&W's u-air, which has that 'invisible air blast'

Do the ranged grab Z-airs count?

ZSS has a few projectile smashes

Even though I'm new to Mega Man, after seeing him in action I loved that he was in. Why? Well, because he was so unconventional. I remember seeing some video with his moves and when I saw he had projectiles as a jab, I was like "NO! What is he doing to Smash...wait, wait, THIS IS GENIUS". I'd love seeing unconventional moves, like Snake's DSmash and USmash. That being said, I'd be down for this, and I think it could fit some characters better than just giving them some random aerial.

This isn't an issue at all.

Look at Snake and Olimar.
Their attacks may look like projectiles but they aren't treated as such meaning they can't be reflected or absorbed.
Both Snake's and Olimar's attacks can be reflected. They are considered projectiles by all of the games functions. They can't be absorbed because they are considered physical, like Link's arrow or boomerang.

Do you mind providing me with a visual? All I have to go on is by what the wiki says.

Well I don't have one at hand, you could try looking up some Falco vs Snake matchups, I'll see if I can find any. I am a bit unsure as I haven't played Brawl in about 3 years but I am fairly certain I have reflected Snake's U-Smash plenty of times, I'll try to look it up.

Watch at 2:40. Snake does his Up-Smash, Wolf does reflector and Up-Smash just goes right by Wolf, when it hits the ground Snake shields, which means that if Snake hadnt shielded then the attack would have hit him.

I will try to get footage where Snake does get hit to get some definite proof as this does not actually prove it, but I have just watched 20 minutes of Falco/Wolf/Fox vs Snake and this is all I have found. You would be surprised how many people apparently do not even try to reflect his Up-Smash.

Edit:

2:35, look at how the missile changes angle and direction when Wolf reflects it.

I know Olimar's stuff can be reflected, since I remember seeing a video somewhere showcasing a glitch occurring as a result of it. Snake's up smash, down smash, and even side smash are all canted as articles in terms of hacking, and seeing as most articles are projectiles also, it's pretty likely at least USmash is reflectable.

I think this is a great idea.

Going from Melee to Brawl made for an increasingly bloated product. Too much quantity, not enough quality and diversity. We need characters who absolutely break the rules. But let's not be crazy; characters that breaks the rules should be characters that break the rules. That is to say, standards characters such as Mario should just give you true, plain and honest play. No funny stuff; it is all easy to understand. But Villager and Mega Man are clearly less than standard characters. A new player will realize right away that these characters are fundamentally different.

Going back to the Villager; it is entirely possible that the tree is considered as a barrier. Something that physically blocks projectiles and other fighters. If that's the case, that is another thing that is absolutely like nothing we have dealt with before.

And I love it.

There is still potential for more, like a character who can passively charge a normal or special by holding the button, allowing the player to still run around and use their other attacks.
