Since I've been playing I have noticed something strange, very seldomly my second jump will not be granted to me
For the longest time I just passed it off as coincidence until I was in training mode today
I tried to perform an air jump and to my surprise I couldnt until I hit the ground again
then after seeing this I decided to do a little test
i attempted to perform 1000 air jumps and during 4 of the attempts I was unable to perform the second jump
and no my buttons are not messed up on my DS
Im beginning to think this may be related to the tripping mechanism found in brawl

The only reason is you hitting the jump button twice at some point during the first jump. I accidentally do this all the time when chasing off-stage and usually SD like an idiot. :p There's no way that there's an intended randomness in whether or the game will grant you a second jump, in any case.

The important thing to pay attention to is whether or not your character entered their second-jump animation or not. I'm not going to call it either way without some more research, though.

On a similar "input isn't going through" note, doing my 100-man as Diddy had some weird moments where, after my Utilt, I couldn't fire my gun until I did something else. But it also could have just been me mistiming things or something.

Ive noticed in this game theres a lot of ways to get cheated out of your second jump. Occationally the jump button double-taps (bounces) and you jump twice without even gaining any height from the first jump. Other culprit is tilt jump being turned on.

I mainly notice my second jump disappears when im being combo'd and even though i didnt move at all, it still registered i jumped so when i get knocked away i cant jump. Died so many times because i held onto my UpB thinking i had a second jump still.

but how hard would Sakurai be laughing right now if you just discovered air tripping after all the drama he was (rightfully) given for stage tripping. I for one would love this if it were an april fools patch or something, but I'm fairly sure we have our two jumps if we use them properly. The same has happened to me when going for a gimp. Visually it appears like only a short hop was input, but the only explanation is that jump was refreshed before and into the aerial... it happens once in a blue moon, but I just brush it off as 3DS finger hijinx, as is the case with the rare side special coming out when you needed an upward recovery...

Best of luck in ironing out your controls, and jokes aside, here's hoping your air trip assumption is incorrect.

I've experienced a different thing in every Smash since Melee. There will be instances of my character sent into post-knockback tumbling and the double jump won't snap him or her out of it, even though I never depleted my second jump to begin with. And that often leads to getting KO'd since the only thing I can do is Up+B and I don't get it in time.

It's only ever happened to me from hits delivered by CPU opponents and Master Hand, I don't think a human player has ever put me into the "jumping is futile" tumble.

Yeah, I've had times where I'm pretty sure I got cheated out of my second jump and SD'd because of it, but then when I saved and watched the replay my guy had actually done his second jump almost right off the initial lift off the ground without getting any height, then I got combo'd off stage. Just have to REALLY watch

Like people have said just keep a look out, also jab combos tend to steal a second jump without even giving you a short twitch to know you actually did it

i have always played with tap jump off so thats not an issue
and like i said i did the jumps in training and the cpu was not set to move at all

i think its funny how players will do everything but admit that maybe the game's code is messed up
ive created many games using AS3, java and other scripts, the possibilities for errors can not be completely eradicated

I could handle the game's code being messed up. But as far as probabilities go, I'd say the consensus in the thread isn't absurd. This is not being talked about by the majority, but is recognized by a select number of people and many seem to think it's due to input. The idea that jumps were overlooked would be really pathetic considering this is 6 years or so in the making and has been play tested to death. Of course it's possible, but it's far more likely that it is just our button inputs doing us dirty. Either way I know it's frustrating T_T so I hope it's ironed out for all of us whether it's the code or springy tiny 3Ds buttons.

Quickly pressing the jump button twice in a row will cause you to air jump almost immediately after leaving the ground. This is most noticeable on Samus due to the large difference between her jump and air jump animations.
