just talked to the employes at my gamestop( purchasing tropical freeze) and they said a midnight release wont happen, they have to have 70 preorders and they never have midnight releases for wii u or 3ds games. I guess preordering at walmart is where I am going to next ( if you have a target close to you, it be wise to preorder there since you get a 5 dollar gift card as bonus)

Let's worry about stuff like this when we actually have a release date, shall we? We don't know how many Wii Us will sell in the interrim, every gamestop is different, and for that matter, we don't know if it will come out the same day as other releases. The fact that it's a local decision on a store by store basis makes it very negotiable for that matter; if the manager is well aware that he's going to make say 30 sales by holding a midnight launch (and that all of those people will buy elsewhere if he doesn't), he probably will regardless of his standard policy. I actually think launch day will be a huge opportunity for all of us; arranging midnight tournaments at launches is going to be an important way to connect with smash fans and some new players who are not a part of the established scene and to try to rope them in. There's a lot to be done in laying the groundwork for a good game launch for your local scene really, but we can't really get started on any of that until we actually have a release date.

Your Gamestop shouldn't have even 70 preorders. It's not available in the system yet, I check every time I go in there.

I guarantee there will be a midnight release (Though this is also determined by the division as some Gamestops will have one while others in the area won't depending on each individual store's sales demographics). Brawl's midnight was enormous, at least at the one I went to. Not to mention that there are often midnight launches for such tiny games as well. When I worked there, there were midnights for games like Brutal Legend where we got maybe 5 people showing up for it. Smash is way bigger than that, it'll be all good.

(raises hand) Waiting outside of Best Buy for almost 7 hours for my Wii U Deluxe Edition was one of the greatest experiences in my life. It was my first console purchase and I felt like part of something magical. Plus, I got to play Zelda: Four Swords on my 3DS with three other people. :p

In any case, I believe in not preordering the games until we get a release date and/or info on the preorder bonuses. Likewise, Gamestop shouldn't be worrying about doing an event right now. If anything, they should be focused on a possible Mario Kart 8 midnight launch since that's only two months away.

This is a little difficult at this time, don't you think? I don't think any employees or any people at all are in a position to make assumptions like this. Seeing as, well... We don't even have a release date yet. Once we get one, then maybe we are in a better position to speculate distribution procedures.

Also, I would take that information you got from whoever that was with a whole shaker of salt. I highly doubt that there won't be a midnight release to be honest. Especially given the amount of hype that the title will continue to build up and eventually give way to. Sounds like a perfect excuse for people to camp out for to me, even if it's not my cup of tea. The pre-order statistics also seem strange, since again, we don't have a release date.

InB4 people complain that SSB4 won't sell well because of not enough preorders for midnight release.

Regardless of when we get a confirmed release date, the turnout for this game will be immense like Brawl was! My dad went out on the eve of that game's release just to get the game for me and he made a comment about how much people were there. But if anything, whatever time the game will come-out, I'll be camping outside well before then!

If I want a game badly I always visit my local retailer 1-2 days before release. They always sell games early. ;D
So.. If my gamestop would do a midnight release.. .. I don't really need them. lol :p

There can't be any details about a possible midnight release until we're closer to the release date... which we don't even know yet.

There's no way a GameStop employee can know if there will or will not be a midnight release for a Smash, considering it's months away from being release.

I'd wait at least until after E3.

I went to Brawl's and it was pretty cool to see other fans in line and excited to play the game.

Also, a lot of us aren't kids. We can handle staying up late on weekends.

I'd like to quote a part of JonTron's "Bootleg Pokemon Games" video.

I've always wanted to go to a midnight release, whether it be movies or video games. The excitement for me of getting smash 4 should keep me awake until I get the copy, go home, and play the game early morning.

Midnight releases are more about the game release being an event, and sharing the excitement with other fans than "I WILL PICK SMASH @ MIDNIGHT AND PLAY ALL NIGHT OMG DERP".

People telling me that people stay up late, mo-foers I work until 3am on a daily basis!
Luckily for us, we're not you.

If this game doesn't come out on a weekend I'm gonna be ****ing pissed.

I mean I'll take a sick day from school either way but I'd really prefer not to.

to me it's the exitment of going out at midnight for a game then playing all day to unlock and discover the game.

To be perfectly honest, I'm a big smash fan and I mainly go at midnight to get it as soon as physically possible. If they make it more of an event so the waiting is less tedious then great but.. I generally dislike other humans so I mainly just keep to myself and wait for the game, ds in hand

Smasboards suck
I went to the Brawl midnight release and my gosh there were at least 30 kids there about 6 to 7 years of age. I was very surprised. They were yelling for people to use Pikachu at the tournament GameStop was having. I would have entered but you could only use the nunchuk and remote.
