Hi,

Just something i've noticed after watching players on stream for a couple hours. There is a ranking system, yes, but there doesnt seem to be any use of it. When you go online, it seems to take the first player that is ready to play.

I've watched around 10h of Zero play, he wins around 80-90% of his game. It's been 35h since he started playing and he doesn't really play other modes so its 35h of him winning around 80%. Yet, he still get match where people have a hard time recovering and hard time just hitting him at all.

Is this an issue ? Was this supposed to be a feature or not ?

TLDR: Matchmaking system doesnt work even for someone with 80%+ winrate...

To be fair, does ANYONE beat Zero frequently in any other iteration of Smash? Last I heard, not many people do.

Additionally, it's rare for matchmaking to deliberately drive you toward a 50-50 win rate.

Lastly, the matchmaking pool is far more limited now than it will be in the long run. Maybe that'll improve it, maybe not.

I'm not saying Zero should lose more... He could still win 80% by being a really good player. What I meant was that some opponent were obviously bad so that the Matchmaking was clearly not taking a "right" opponent for him and his rank.

By the way, a matchmaking system goal should be to drive you to 50-50. Only the top players should manage a higher winrate depending on their "position". Like a top 5 player would have 90% winrate because he fight against the top 20-40 people maybe even more.

The matchmaking's goal should be to give you an even fight, regardless of win streak or ratio. 50-50 is normally a natural side effect of that, but it shouldn't be what the MM system shoots for. If it did, then depending on how hard it tried to do so, it could easily throw average players against a newcomer one game for an easy win, and then against a pro player next game to even it out.

Another tricky thing about matchmaking systems is that absolutely every new entry into the system needs calibration, which depending on your system can take basically anywhere from 3-10 games, maybe more. The game's new, so aside from those people who are obviously playing nothing but For Glory mode, the rest of the players (and the ones they were facing) were likely getting matched during their calibration rounds. Once the playerbase establishes itself more (and we get the game in more countries), that problem should hopefully be lessened by calibrating new players starting with a specific rating-range and adjusting from there. Not to say that's not what it claimed to do to begin with, but it's a theory.

Namco Bandai perfected level matchmaking, I hope they included it in smash as well. It was the best feature of Tekken Tag 2. I could finally play online without getting my ass kicked 100% of the time.

From the sounds of it, it's a Sakurai matchmaking system. It's probably just to coral the noobs and pros a bit further apart then a totally random system.

Not many people even have the game at this point so we will have to see how good it really is when more people get the game.

Wow, most of the hype just got killed. How are you playing for glory? your just playing for fun lol. You don't have anything to work to like a high rank or something

I'm not too fuzzed about rankings or Smash Power. I'd mostly play "For Glory" to avoid Time Mode. Kill steals by characters that have more KO power are never "For Fun".

Still, why not just have a setting against what kind of player you'd prefer to battle? It solves the need for an automatic system.

That's a great idea! What if you want an extra challenge than set it to hard. Or if you just want easy kills than go on easy. But if this were it be implemented than it should show what kills you got based on what setting you played on.

....actually, that would be abusing the system, I suppose. I meant to just set it to easy when your little cousin is playing or it's your first time online, and set it to hard when you are playing regularly.(assuming you're an experienced player, that is)

Oh that's what you mean. That still sounds like a good idea though! :)
