Remember how Melee had the lottery, where you spent coins to try and get new trophies? And in Brawl, the Coin Launcher?

Well, in Smash 4, what if a new approach was taken and instead of spending coins, you use your knowledge of Nintendo history in order to earn trophies related to the subject asked? For example, if you were asked a question such as, "What is the name of the professor in Luigi's Mansion?"

You'd then choose between three choices which in this case may be

A. Prof. Egghead
B. Dr. Ghostly
C. Prof. E Gadd

Answering correctly would earn you a trophy for Professor E Gadd. I'd think that if they can write individual descriptions for hundreds of trophies some trivia questions would not be too difficult. What do you all think?

I honestly like this idea. For a huge nintendo fan like me it gives a fun way to test my knowledge. I could see it being a problem for any less experienced players though, plus the internet could ruin the experience. A difficulty setting to allow for rarer trophies would be good.

This would be really cool for older, more knowledgeable people, but it might kinda suck for newer players. I guess in that way the internet would serve as a way for those to still have access to everything, since I'm sure people who know the answers would be willing to challenge themselves.

I love this.

Though to make it more challenging, there should be different difficulties, with different questions in each:
*Easy
- Ex. The question in the OP about E. Gadd

*Medium
- Ex. What is the theme of the second dungeon in Wind Waker:
A. Fiery Volcano
B. Grassy Forest
C. Windy Temple
D. Watery Sea

*Hard
- Ex. What is the name of Rosalina's Black Luma companion in Mario Galaxy:
A. Cosmo
B. Polari
C. Orion
D. Spectra

*Extreme
- Ex. When was the release date in Japan of the original Super Mario Bros.:
A. Sept. 13, 1985
B. Oct. 10, 1985
C. Aug. 14, 1985
D. Sept. 15, 1085

Whatever trophy you got would depend on what difficulty you used.
The higher the difficulty, the rarer the trophy.

Anything that rewards how hardcore of a Nintendo fan you are is a huge YES in my book.

Easy would earn you a simple trophy about an item or something most of the time. Answering a question ranked medium could give you a trophy based on characters not seen ingame, but still important. Hard would earn you a trophy about an Assist Trophy, and finally Extreme would give you an extra trophy about a playable character giving some interesting facts (such as Sonic's Werehog form from Unleashed)

Only if it has fur like the DKC Tropical Freeze trophies.

This would be a great way to make people stop calling Koopas 'turtles'. I mean, what's better than educating people on Nintendo lore?

Or that Link isn't Zelda and Zelda isn't Link.

Seems like it would cause more problems than it would solve. They would either be extremely generic questions that would eventually repeat, or something that would require a lot of people to run off to the internet. And you hae to realize, Nintendo's goal fanbase is people of all ages, "causal" and "hardcore". Quizzing for trophies would mean further splitting those groups.

I think another Coin Blaster style minigame would be the best option.

Lying about my country.
I honestly don't like it.

The questions you know the answer to?

Whatever, just give the correct answer, woohoo, no biggie, here's your trophy.

The ones you don't? Google. There's no reason not to, and once you do, the whole point of the thing just dies and ends up being an unnecesary and even annoying addition.

It'd get old really fast.

I guess I agree that it's not too rewarding if used for that, but hell how about trivia questions popping up during loading screens?

I wouldn't want to risk lagging the load times for a game like this. Melee and Brawl had some payload animations that pretty much last a few seconds and I would like to keep it that way.

There's no doubt in my mind that we'll be getting a new minigame for unlocking trophies. A trivia mode has potential, but a lot of good points have been brought up about how rigged it could be.

Answering questions based on their theme would be the biggest redundancy. The Prof. E Gadd example in the OP makes me think of this; just unlock his trophy because he was the correct answer to the question. That sound really boring and obvious. No surprise like with the Lottery and Coin Launcher.

Consider how the questions work too. If you wanted to get the most challenge out of it so the questions can't be cheated if you return to them, put a timer on all questions and do not reveal the right answer if you get it wrong or the timer runs out. A difficulty setting would also ensure the scale of subject matter so casual and hardcore players can get more from the knowledge. You would also get rarer trophies at higher difficulties. Here are some examples of the tougher questions:

When was The Legend of Zelda released in Japan?
Why are Ylisse and Plegia hostile towards each other in Fire Emblem: Awakening?
What was the game that famously caused Shigeru Miyamoto to flip over a table?
Who was the producer of the first Metroid game?
What was Nintendo's main business venture before video games?

Also, assuming in game currency makes a return through Coin Battles and Solo modes, how will they be applied to this game? Maybe there could be some sort of wager for how many coins you put into a set of questions. Depending on how many answers you get correct in accordance to the amount coins you wagered, you could get a bonus trophy or two. There could also be a second counter for trophy rarity relative to how many coins wagered.

I dunno; trophies are supposed to be a kind of badge of honour. They should each require an in-game feat to unlock, otherwise they lose their meaning.

Remember getting that Resetti trophy in Melee?

Even if trivia would be the trophy minigame for SSB4, character, Final Smash, event, and achievement trophies would still have to be unlocked in their traditional ways. Now those are some trophies worth the honor.

I really like this idea! It's a fun, new, innovative way to collect trophies. Maybe one day it'll come true...

You know something like the minigame from Banjo Kazooie before the Final Boss could work , like for example each time you enter the game the bid is 10 coins if you lose you can pay 10 coins again, you have three continues before you get kicked out or run out of coins, once the game is over you receive prizes from the number of questions answered correctly and if you win the game you receive a special trophy.

I absolutely love this idea! If this actually does happen I'll have to do some hardcore research on some games I don't know very well.
