We've seen Luigi U which was a great bit of pseudo DLC, and Nintendo gladly oblidged when we begged for Captain Toad (which is looking lovely)... therefore do you think Smash U will also find a way to produce a spin-off based on its engine?

I am not saying I think Sakurai plans already for there to be anything like that, merely asking if you think the nature and adaptability of Smash Bros will provide any easy opening for a game 'inspired' by it that borrows from its engine, as well as if you'd like to see things from Smash Bros used as the basis for a different kind of 2D game.

I've got all-sorts of ideas floating around in my head, from games akin to the 'more familiar' game called Super Mario Bros 2 though with a larger character selection through to one idea I call 'Sub-Par Smash Bros'.

(My basic thought would be that the number of moves available to each character would be much smaller, namely B, A B-Air, A-Air, B-Dash, and A-Dash so that you felt much weaker and limited, while ATs would become the only items available; summoning the characters from the cast of Smash 4 only. That is just wishful thinking, but I hope it gets you thinking about wierd Smash spin-offs.)

I doubt it. Most of the spinoff-type games have been for extremely old franchises (Super Luigi) or... I dunno how to label Captain Toad because honestly I didn't know he was unique from every other toad until E3. There's nothing really to gain by investing in an extra version of Smash when that time can be spent patching in new content and stuff for the existing game, or spent working on another game entirely.

Smash Bros is already somewhat of a spin-off already though, so I don't think there will be any further offshoots. Well I guess there was that Kirby mini-game that was a bit similar.

Current things I can think of that are semi recent spinoffs would be Captain Toad, Super Princess Peach, and Luigi's Mansion 2, Hyrule Warriors and the Mario Maker thing. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we got a huge Puzzle League reboot (maybe with Rosalina or something) ala Tetris DS. I absolutely loved Pokemon Puzzle League and all its modes, I'd love to see something like that happen again. I would also LOVE a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2 but will that ever happen is the question

Smash Bros is that series that capitilises on assets.

A good number of things look directly ripped from other games.
