So I have actually never owned a nintendo of any sort but i've always loved the super smash bros games and played the **** out of the first one on project64 when I was younger. I found this forum like 10 years ago when I was playing a LAN competition for team fortress 2 and my computer broke so I just went over to where the smash people were playing and joined them for the rest of the day. My partner is in a similar boat in that she likes it but never had much of an opportunity to play, and now that we're grown-ass adults we thought it would be cool to rent out a console over the holiday period and just go hard at it for a few weeks. Problem is, the console rental industry apparently died at some point and now the minimum lease time is like 12 months.

So what we'd actually need to be doing is buying one and then selling it again, which raises the stakes somewhat. Thats why I'd like a bit of you guys expertise, before I jump into anything. What is this nintendo switch ****? Its like a handheld but you can plug it into your TV - but does that mean we need two of them if we want to play local games or what? Also the controllers don't look that ergonomic, I played on a wii once and it hurt my hands after an hour and I don't want a repeat of that if possible. I've seen some people posting about using gamecube controllers with the switch, is that hard to do? I remember the gamecube controllers being pretty good. Should I just get a gamecube instead? I kind of wanted the "new hotness" though, ala smash ultimate.

I think that sort of sums up the kind of advice I need, anything helps. Hit me with your knowledge, friends, thanks in advance.

Basically the idea behind the Switch is that it's both a handheld and a console. It comes with a dock that plug into your TV, and you can put the Switch in the dock to use it as a TV console, or take it out of the dock to use it as a handheld. Local play only requires two Switches if one or both of you want to play in handheld mode.

And yeah, the default controllers aren't the greatest. It does come with a thing that you can slide the joycons into to turn them into a more traditional controller, but it'd still be better to get a Gamecube controller or a Switch Pro Controller.

edit: oh yeah one thing I forgot, there's a "Switch Lite" version of the console which can only be used in handheld mode

-The switch is basically a handheld and a home console in one, yeah. I would suggest looking up a youtube unboxing or something for the basic stuff.

-The console is going to lose at least 25% of its value as soon as you buy it, so keep that in mind.

-You can purchase a gamecube controller adapter. You don’t need to use the standard joycons. The adapter can also be used on PC to play Smash 64, Melee, Brawl & P+. That would be my suggestion for your smash fix If you’re not looking to spend a ton of money & you’ve already got a decent PC. Especially since slippi now exists which makes melee delightful to play online.
