newbie controller question

Hi, I just started playing melee (kinda late to the party). I use a ds3 controller, no problem with wavedash, dash dance, teching, etc but I can't shorthop by pressing the X button normally with chars of 4 or less frames. I solve this by tapping the edge of the button with the tip of my finger (feels unnatural but I'm quickly getting used to it). My question is: would a gamecube controller help? If so, will the muscle memory that I'm currently developing (specially for shffl) be worthless?

Thanks.

(I'm not sure this kind of thread belongs here since I'm new)

Yes, a GameCube controller will help. And you will basically have to start over with muscle memory, it will only somewhat transfer over.

Smash 4 controllers are $22 on amazon.

My current controller is a $17 used silver one from ebay. I've had 2 MIOM top 100 players offer to buy it from me, one for $40. It shield drops and back dashes really well. It does take some luck to get a great one.

In what condition was the silver one when you got it? Was it dirty and had a quite large disjointed (wobbly) zone on the stick?
That's how a silver controller I saw today in a store for 25€ was, and as I don't have much experience with them, I'm just wondering if it might be still worth that.

The play in the stick is about twice as much as a brand new super-sticky sm4sh controller, which is still very small. Upon feeling this I had my doubts regarding its back dash ability, but no problems.

If it shield drops consistently, it necessarily has a small loose zone, so the looseness of the stick has to be exclusively disjointed zone. (I define "loose zone" as "different values that can be read by the control stick while not being pressed, depending on last direction pressed", and "disjointed zone" as "play between the stickbox rails that causes the stick to move without resistance, without the values changing".)

I theorized since a while ago that a bit of a disjointed zone can actually be advantageous for back dashes – because of the play between the rails, there should be less friction, allowing for faster moving through the tilt area. In addition, while passing through the disjointed zone, the thumb can accelerate, so at the moment the stick is starting to read inputs above the dead zone threshold, it has a higher speed than with a stickbox that has a very small or nonexistent disjointed zone.

Not sure if it really is like that, but at least your experience lines up with that theory.

Kadano Kadano I just want you to know that I feel most lucky of the controller's ability to shield drop. In my experience silver ones back dash well generally.

edit: the acceleration makes sense
