New way to play teams?

So after watching some of the tournament this past weekend, I got to thinking about the teams events.

I noticed, as im sure some do, that there were several of the same character used at one time, even up to 3 fox's on the screen at once. This had me thinking of ways to potentially "diversify" the field a bit.

This lead to an idea of character drafting, where once a character is taken, no other player would be allowed to choose that character. This could be done in a couple ways, a player from team 1 would pick a character, then a player from team 2, and they would just alternate.

Another way would be similar to how stages are stricken. A player from team 1 picks a character, then both players from team 2 pick their characters, followed by the last player on team 1. This would be due to any potential advantage had by the team allowed to pick the first character.

I feel like the main issue would be how to handle character switching between rounds. You would probably just have to re-draft and just swap the order the teams chose their characters in.

This could potentially work well for smash 64 as well, especially given its narrow roster. I think it would have less impact on PM or smash4 simply due to how many more characters are available.

Just a random idea, which i might test out at some weeklies once we get a bit more established, but I'd love some feedback if anyone has ever thought of or test this type of thing out.

What is this, affirmative action for low tiers? Do you hate combos and exciting gameplay or something?

Isn't Smash Bros about picking your favorite characters without any restrictions?

Are you saying combo's and exciting gameplay are not possible without at least 2 fox's and/or 2 shieks in play?

Yeah, but this was just an idea to bring a bit more outside strategy into the game. Would you take a character from a player that's really good with him that you might not be quite as good with? Or do you take a chance with your best character against theirs?

If people don't play who they want to play, they're gonna feel restricted and not be at 100%. /thread

Edit: Opinions like yours aren't all that uncommon and pop up every now and again concerning different aspects of the game. But while they have good intention, they often don't consider how forcing/pushing for anything too hard without the player's own choice isn't gonna be popular or feel as genuine. What's the point in diversity of characters if people are forcedto play them? That's kinda like parents forcing their children to all grow up to be doctors so their family looks good. Even if it does get them a good lifestyle and all, they won't be happy or realize their full potential. Diversity Things are always if they happen naturally lol

I like how you answered two questions with two more questions. Guess I'll just go along with that. Why do you think that having "diversity" is a good thing? Why do you think having 3 foxes on screen is bad? You haven't given a single reason. All you said is that it "led to an idea about character striking", which is not a reason. This isn't league, people have main characters bro.

Sounds like they should get better with more characters.

Having diversity might not be better overall, but as i said, having to think about your character choices, especially since so many people main the same character(s), it would force people to think outside their comfort zone, which could possibly bring about unique situations for some characters, and might get people thinking in new ways with characters or character combinations they might not be as familiar with.

I also never would suggest this take over as the main teams format, but would possibly make for an interesting side event.

If you want to see "unique" matchups that do not involve the top 10 characters or so, then feel free to attend a low tier tournament, or organize your own! Own maybe you could invite three friends to your place and play random characters on teams. But do realize that nobody would agree the play the game mode you are pitching here. Think about it, if your team is Samus/doctor mario, you could go through the whole bracket without having to play any secondaries. But the fox/fox team will always have to play their secondaries. What you're suggesting makes no sense in a real life context.

rewarded for not tier-whoring, sounds fine to me.

also, only 1 of the members of fox/fox would have to pick a secondary.

So it might force you to use a different character and expand your knowledge about the game? I realize people like to stick with one character, but learning something new might end up helping you in the long run. What if you get into a match where your opponent knows your main better than you do? Just accept it as a hard loss that you can do nothing about? Or do you learn a character they might have issues fighting against that gives you a better chance against him?

If you solo Fox or Falco, you would be pretty stupid to switch unless you break your hands.
