I just started playing brawl I want to get into competitive Project M but don't know who is a balanced character for new players. I like Olimar but he seems to be a more advanced character. Who do y'all recommend for me to play?

Mario, he is the perfect/simplest character that everyone can grab and be good with. or where everyone starts out with, Fox..

Mario, Marth, Sheik, and Ivysaur are all effective characters that are easy to get a grasp of quickly when starting out. But you really shouldn't limit yourself to these few characters, or any other character's people suggest here - every character in PM is pretty viable at any given level of play. It might take some adjusting to how you should play Olimar - who's playstyle is pretty unique compared to the rest of the cast - but you should be able to pick up just about any character you feel like and get good with them within a few days/weeks or so. Just pick whoever feels natural to you.

I say stick with Olimar he's very approachable, good combo potential, getting to play someone unique and your already having fun playing him
Sounds like you already found a winner

Olimar isn't advanced. He just sucks.

Ouch. Didn't even beat around the bush.

Olimar's still young guys. It took like 8 years for us to figure out Puff was top tier (melee). He just needs more representation to advance his metagame faster. Not everybody can be easy like Mario.

Pick your favorite and learn them. That's what Smash is about, especially since PM balances things much more closely than the unmodded games.

On that note, I'm sure I read somewhere that Brawlimar's metagame took years to develop. He was stuck in mid/high-mid tiers up until 2011/2012 or something, and now he's ranked best after MK iirc. Maybe the Brawlimar's just haven't come over, or PM Olimars haven't adjusted well to differences. Maybe he just worked better in the Brawl environment?

Well, it's extremely difficult to identify anything that PM Olimar does better than brawl Olimar. Almost every character based change he received was a downgrade from Brawl. He relies entirely on the increased hitstun, gravity, and such to perform well.

The over-all focus on less-campy gameplay also hurt him, since that was his big trick. He's now a campy character in an aggressive game.
