Hello everyone. I saw I should introduce myself and I'll be searching around and trying to meet the newer members as well.
Like the title says I'm completely new to Smash, I did play melee as a kid with my brother when I was little but I didn't understand it at all back then, but within the past few months a friend of mine got me interested in the competitive scene. I've decided I want to get on a comfortably competitive level, but I'm having trouble starting. I'm still having trouble picking a main, and in the process of trying to find who I enjoyed playing on For Glory, my winrate is incredibly low and has me discouraged. I have had people tell me that For Glory isn't a good measure of skill and that I should find people I know that I enjoy playing with and just have fun to decide who I want to main, which leads me here.

From what I can tell the Smash community is very open and welcoming and I look forward to getting to know some of you.

Welcome. Choosing a main can be hard, Lord knows I've never had a 100% concrete main myself. Just choose a character you feel comfortable playing and complements your play style. If your looking for people to play you should do some research into the competitive scene in your area, tournaments may be being hosted or just casual get together's.

I'm still not entirely sure what my play style is, but I know I like Donkey Kong, but I feel like it would be too hard to learn with him right off the start with him, but I'm really enjoying Falco. I'm scared to go to a tournament until I have some sort of actual knowledge of what I'm doing, but I'll check to see if there is a casual get together some time soon.
Like, I just learned how to tech today.

The best way to find a main is to just try every character and see their move set and just feel out the character. After all trying one character you'll just know when it feels right for you.
