So I'm new to smash, not only the forums but I've only played 64 and melee extremely sparingly. After my friend got a 64 the other day with smash we played it for a few hours and I watched the Smash Brothers documentary and I really wanna get into it. The question is which would be the best game to get into. It's basically between melee and Wii u. Now melee would be cheaper overall cus I need a system and the game but wii u is newer and has online. Somewhat would you guys recommend.

If you want to get into a faster more in depth (and fun in my honest opinion) game that takes more time to learn, has a very high skill curve and certain viable characters go with Melee. If you want a slower paced game that still takes a lot of time to get good at and has a not as crazy skill curve go with Smash 4. Also if you want to get competitive don't rely on the Online capabilities because there will be input lag and a lot of the time just over all lag. I love both games and it's your choice to choose, not ours. Personally I'd go with both, but if you can only do one I'd go with Melee since Smash 4 is very new and the rules are all screwed up currently. Happy Smashing! :kirby:

I'm from the Melee boards so I'm obviously biased, but I would say that it depends upon what you're looking for, but Melee is better. Wii U is a great game if you are looking for a fun game to play with your friends every now and again, has more trophies, stickers, customizable movesets, a bigger soundtrack with more songs from more games, online, and a much larger roster. Content-wise, graphics-wise, and sound-wise, Wii U is a better game.

The difference (and the reason I would recommend Melee) is in the gameplay department. There are techniques such as Dashdancing, Wavedashing, L-Cancelling, Moonwaking, and others that make the game flow better if you know how to use them. Melee's skill gap is MUCH wider than Wii U at the moment. Melee is much more precise and doesn't have buffer frames (allows you to execute the commands it thinks you wanted from flubbed inputs), and you feel like you're in direct control of your character, and although getting good at it takes a LOT more work, I feel that Melee has a more long-term reward.
