Hello everbody, this is my first post so I apologize ahead of time for the things I don't know.

I picked up melee a few months ago, and I've been studying different characters, matchups, and techniques. I haven't had problems with any of the techniques other than wavedashing. I can do a wavedash, but I find it extremely difficult to perform multiple in succession, so I can't really use this as a movement option yet. Also, I just can't break the habit of using Marth's aerials way too early. On Jigglypuff, I don't quite understand how to do what people call the "wall of pain" through either her forward or back airs. I either jump too short horizontally, or jump through them.
Any advice on how to break these habits? Practice makes perfect, but I was hoping someone might have tips specific to these problems.

Also, what character should I main? So far I've had a lot of fun with a lot of the cast, other than Bowser and DK. I love them all and can't seem to make the choice myself, but I want a character that will be worth investing time in to that will be a lot of fun along the way

Well investing practice into a top tier as your main is a good idea. Any of the top tiers that fits your play style is worth investing time into. They will be fun along the way since you wont lose all the time because of your characters limitations :p whatever floats your boat as long as the character isnt too low tier

Try using R to wavedash. It's keeps more of the muscle memory in 1 hand. Also, characters can have different jump squat animation timings from each other. The muscle memories for them will be slightly different. Try forcing it into friendly play to develop the memory cues to do it on command in normal friendies

If you've only been playing a few months, I wouldn't worry about wavedashing too much. Eventually you will come to the point where you will become dissatisfied with normal movement options and you begin to wavedash more. By the time that you feel like you really need to wavedash a lot, you'll probably have the muscle memory down.

If you're just looking for someone to start learning with, I'd highly recommend Marth. He's a character that is heavily rooted in fundamentals; he has an amazing dash-dance and wavedash, his grab game is unmatched, and you're rewarded for good spacing. I picked up Marth to learn the fundamentals when I first started getting into competitive play and ended up sticking with him as my main. Not to say you'll have to main Marth just because you practice with him at first, but much of what you learn while playing Marth will transfer to any other character that you choose to play.
