New to Smash on Emulator

Hello, I am very new to competitive smash however I have been getting very into it the past few weeks and am looking to play outside my group of friends. I'm not sure which controller setup I should get for project 64 nor do I know how to connect with people online and play online matches. Any help is appreciated !
