Hell, for the most part, I am new to competitive Smash, however, I am not new to fighting games in general, so I am able to have a good grasp of things like frame data. I played Brawl more than Melee mainly because I no longer have my copy of Melee, so Project M was an amazing find a couple years back, but it was more like a demo build, so I never got serious about it until I wanted to play some Smash again.

Right now I am practicing Wave Dashing and DI, since those are apparently skills required to be successful, but I was wondering on what else I should focus on once I get a better grasp on those concepts. (Although, I am having trouble doing Wave Dashing right now.)

I also like to watch some final/semi-final rounds of various tournaments in order to learn a bit more as well. Not really looking for combos (I'll worry about those once I get the basics down,) but more or less what I need to do to start understand the building blocks of pulling off said combos.

Right now I am maining Roy, since that is the character I had the most success with against my friends, and he was a favorite of mine from Melee.

If you play other fighting games I recommend you check out my video tutorial meant for helping out FG players get into smash:

It's for melee, but everything in it applies to Project M as well.

In response to the actual query, I can only really say:
Diversify over time. There's a LOT to learn, no downplaying that.

Oh, definitely. This is going to take a good while, but I have fun doing it, so it looks like I am going to stick with it for some time.

There are a series of advanced how to play ssbm videos on YouTube, they are definitely worth checking out. Apart from that, just learn the basic techs and try not to let them get in the way of your mental game. Once you have them down you could try practicing circuits around different stages, smash is hugely based on movement, so practicing getting from one place to another as fast as possible and in a variety of ways can really help your game.

Does anybody have some tips for short hops? Or to be exact, a technique that will make it easier? I keep on pressing the button too hard, even when I am being rather delicate with my jump presses.

Try sliding your finger off the button instead of pressing it and lifting your finger up.

Alternatively, find something to move your finger to, then practice doing it that way. Even if you just want an empty hop.
I c-stick all my aerials except Nair of course, so for those, the practice of SHFFLing as fast as possible eventually had my finger moving off of the jump button fast enough to SH since I needed that time anyways to reach the cstick. For nairs just roll your thumb downward to get your finger off the Y button ASAP. Assuming you're using Y. If not, start using Y it's better

Yeah, I always use Y, but I'll keep this in mind. I was trying to do wavedashing, and then I realized you needed short hops to do it, so I tried doing short hops over and over again. (50 in a row was my goal, but I could only do 5 in a row.) Hopefully this will help some.

Will keep this in mind.

You don't need to short hop to wavedash, you just need to airdodge as soon as you leave the ground.

Ahhhh, okay, I had a feeling I was doing something off, considering it wasn't consistent.
