Hi, I just recently started watching lots of videos on melee and was really interested, although curious on the games current lifespan. I know I am extremely late to the game and is it worth trying to improve with the game being so old? also, if I did decide to play where would I find a list/tutorial of all the AT in the game? How would I improve, lets say im a total newbie with no friends who have interest in melee because Sm4sh, how would I improve alone? thanks for all your answers in advance. :)

Hello and welcome!
Melee still have a lot of years to flourish, so it is indeed worth it to practice. If you are really serious about practicing on your own you can get the 20XX Hack which features ai that's on a whole new level (will make lvl 9s look like they are just randomly pressing buttons). I can't post links, but just search for it here in smashboards

There are plenty of new players joining at the same time you are. It isn't populated only by veterans

You can practice the techniques until you can get it down to 2nd nature in a serious game. Once you're able to do the needed abilities, you could also play Smash 4 online to work on the more strategic aspects of Smash like prediction

I would suggest you look up Facebook and try to find a Smash scene around you. While it's definitely possible to start practicing on your own and getting good, working with people that are better than you can really jump start your progress. Speaking from my own experience, I know most of the basic "advanced techs" such as WDing, L-Cancelling, SH, DD, and the like. The hard part is getting to a point where I know when to use them and I can use them without trying. Sadly, the only way to do this from what I've seen is by playing other people. AI in the game just doesn't cut it, although apparently the AI in 20XX is really good! As for is it worth buying, I would say yes. It's miles ahead of Brawl/64, and S4msh doesn't have close to the competitive scene Melee does.

thanks a lot for giving your POV dude, I understand your point on the AT part. I feel like I will master them but I need to get to a point where I do them at the right time with kind of like thoughtless thinking. its gotta come naturally. I will def look into 20xx when my stuff arrives from amazon :3 the only thing now is I feel bad about playing Falco ;c I would like to use someone not everybody hates but I love the guy so ... :/ also, are people at local tournnaments going to be at the skill level I see some of the random players on stream I see? they seem too high level for a beginner.

Don't worry about that. Play who you want. As for local tournaments, I can't really speak to that because I haven't been to once yet. Just a smash or two with some people that play around me. I guess you'll have to go and find out. xD

I can guarentre that you will be absolutely demolished at the first tournament you go to, but that's fine. You will learn a lot about the game and make sure that even after you lose bracket, stay and play friendlies. You will make new friends, get better at the game, and hopefully get farther next tournament. The first tournament I went to, I got 4-stocked in PM on stream. Also, if you have a USB GC adapter, you could emulate 20XX on a desktop and use your USB adapter.

These are good, they teach you well. They may be lengthy, but you can cut it into small segments per day and once you get one technique down, you can move onto the next segment.

I'd still recommend getting it on a console and play it on a CRT first, if you have no choice, then go ahead and emulate it. Wiis are sold pretty cheap and they're not hard to softmod to play Melee. CRT TVs you can find them for like $10 or even free in some cases.

Agreed. I have Melee and PM on my normal setup, but I emulated 20XX to avoid Homebrew and potentially bricking my system I try anything dumb.

Don't worry; if the people in your scene are as nice as the people in my scene, you'll make new friends :)

Have a nice tv with composite cables so I'll be fine in that dept. If I ever find a need to emulate it I'll be sure to do so, and I have no doubt about making friends Im a people person haha
