Switch your main.

Nah, j/k. Roy's cool. You will get a lot of raised eyebrows at tournaments though probably.

Honestly, the best advice anyone can give is just practice, practice, practice. Find local fests and tournaments and network with players in your area around your skill level and a bit above so you can play against a wide variety of people and learn match-ups as well as get a taste of how different players react to different situations in the game. Learn at a pace that's right for you. A lot of people want to jump right into the deep end and go for the heavy tech stuff right away. That's all well and good, but a lot of times new players learn those skills and don't know what to do with them. The most important thing to learn at first is the game mechanics itself. Find out your character's strengths and weaknesses. Get used to your spacing, speed, strength, and hitboxes. See where your enemies go when you hit them different ways and learn to capitalize on that. Tech stuff will come in to fill in the blanks later.

Have fun in your Melee journey.

Welcome to the good life.

First off, read this thread:
It will give you some idea of playing smash competitively (If you are taking it seriously that is. If not, it's still worth a look)

Secondly, Since you are playing Roy, I will warn you that you will be playing at a large disadvantage Roy is considered one of the worst characters in Melee and you may just plateau. BUT DON'T LET THAT SCARE YOU AWAY FROM ROY! As long as you are having fun playing Roy in Melee, you are set.

Thirdly, don't expect to do well at your first tournament or pull a Ken (Winning your first tournament). In fact, I think the first goal for any new smash player would be to try to make it out of pools.

Practice, Practice, PRACTICE PLS!!! Even if you think you have an advanced technique or a combo down., practice it. Practice a technique until it's second nature, and you don't think about it. Also, make sure you learn how to apply the advanced techniques like wavedashing, L-Canceling, Dash Dancing. If you ever need help with Roy, feel free to browse his subforum on Smashboards.

Finally, have fun! You are playing this game competitively because it's fun. Go to tournaments and interact with other people. Make new friends and stuff. If you don't find it fun, find a way to fix it or call it a day.

I wish you good luck on your Journey in Melee
Welcome to the good life (as Squire stated).

First of all, I recommend switching your main from Roy to Marth, this is because Marth is very similar to Roy but is overall a better character and higher up the tier list, but don't let me dishearten you, if you like Roy THAT much stay Roy! You might become the best Roy player in the world! Your main aside, there is tons of guides on teh youtubes that can teach you all sorts of tech skill (L-canceling,Teching,Wave Dashing etc.) and good strategies for your Main.

EPslion has linked you some great guides so I wont bother, happy smashing!

That's great! Roy is indeed very fun! But, if your going to be competing in tournaments, other people will out-cancel you just because everyone will most likely be playing a character on the tier list from like 1 - 9. But, Roy is very unique! The thing about Roy though, is HIS AERIALS ARE TERRIBLE. If you knock your opponent off of the edge, and they are recovering and you go for a d-air, your dead. The end-lag is terrible on his aerials. Although, if you learn all of the mechanics needed for Melee Roy, you will most likely win. But, since your Roy, your probably going to lose.. a lot.. But, everyone starts somewhere haha. If your looking for an example, check out Sethlon's Melee Roy.

Roy is pretty bad. You're going to have to face tough match ups against you constantly. You can use him if you want, but I'd recommend maining 1 of the top 8 (Fox, Falco, Sheik, Jigglypuff, Marth, Peach, Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon). They're more capable of doing things

Which is exactly why I plan on maining falco and peach too :3

Good luck man. I suggest to start with the essentials, as mentioned above.

Honestly, you will probably go a lot farther if you switch to marth now.

I see your point and I decided im going to pick up marth as well as Roy bc I like them both and can't choose just one to main

I think you're trying to juggle too many characters to please us in the comments section. If you're only starting out and are trying to main 4 different characters it will become a real struggle so I recommend deciding between Roy and Marth and then deciding your secondary. Personally I would pick Marth and Peach because they are very different characters and would allow you to have a wider base of good matchups. Personal opinions aside, I HIGHLY recommend switching too Marth. Seriously...

Using multiple characters is harder than sticking to only 1. Players are usually only as good as their highest ceiling. But if someone's just starting out, there isn't much wrong with learning a few extra characters. I recommend trying every character they like thoroughly until that person is certain which character they'll end up being best as

Yes I TOTALLY agree with you but I'm mainly trying to express that you shouldn't main both Marth and Roy because of the similarities. I feel it would be a waste maining them both because if you were to go to a tournament and lose playing Roy then switching to Marth and winning as him then realizing Marth performs much better than Roy and eventually leaving Roy behind.

I think he might learn that on his own. I've seen someone else go through almost the exact same process

Yeah I did some careful thinking and finally decided on Marth
