Ever get tired of dealing with spammers online? Does Cloud ever put a cloud over your head? Need help combating a laggy player? Well, a new strategy has arrived, one which will neutralize your threat while keeping you safe...

Ban Blocking

What is this? Ban Blocking is the act of disabling your Smash in such a way that you effectively block and ban associated with doing so.

As of current, there are three known ways to do this; 1 with the 3DS, and 2 with the Wii U.

Instructions

Wii U
1. Unplug your Console
2. Remove your Disc

3DS
1. Remove your Catridge

Why does this work?
Thanks to Sm4shExplorer, it is now known that bans are actually clientside. This means that any instance in which you can get banned comes from your game. What does this mean? In order for you to be penalized, you have to perform in action in the game to trigger it. Data must be transmitted that a requirement was met, therefore allowing the ban, so by unplugging your console or removing your disc (Wii U), you effectively sever or disrupt (respectively) the transmission of data to your game (or more specifically, the ban file). With the 3DS, unplugging the Catridge has a similar effect.

Why don't conventional methods (such as Powering-Off) work?
That's because the Power Button is still a button. When you press the Power Button, it actually sends a signal to your game and console to shut your console off. This button is apparently logged in Smash 4's identified button range (presumably as a value), and once the value associated with the Power Button is pressed, the game loads the scripts that trigger a penalty-ban in your Smash Bros, before the console loads it's scripts to power itself off.

Imagine Offline as the outside, Online as a room, and Quitting as a spiky hallway leading to the outside; You can go outside whenever you please, however, not without first facing (or rather, walking through) the consequences. Ban Blocking would be like teleporting through your room to reach the outside. The system was prepared to punish walking (actions), however, with teleportation, it's an anomalous and instantaneous situation which cannot be countered, similar to Ban Blocking.

Important Information
  • Removing your disc (Wii U) can (though won't always) give you penalty time, however, it's a generic punishment which exists primarily for anomalous situations that desynced your match, yet are still within the context of your game's activity. This means that ban typically can be anywhere from 4-30 seconds, with it rarely (if ever) exceeded that amount. It is believed that this is because the Eject Button is still a button, and, unlike 3DS, doesn't sever, but rather disrupts the data; something which can be logged, yet is too ambiguous to warrant a standard ban. This will properly sever the data in 3DS, however.
  • This will not corrupt your game.
  • The ejection method (Wii U) will not work on most DLC stages (if any). The reason why is still unclear, it has been speculated that it's due to either DLC Stages being loaded separately from the rest of the game and are viewed as self-existing entities, or that they have a special loading function or flag that ensures everything is loaded or ejection is ignored respectively (which both could hypothetically stop ejection). Interestingly, ejecting the disc at Hyrule Castle 64 and then quitting in game can cause parts of the model to disappear (turning to blackness), however, this leaves no lasting effects on the game.
  • Sometimes, the game will stall ejecting the disc until either a certain time has passed, or a certain event happens. This is most infamously seen where the game won't eject if you press the button right as a character is getting star K.O.'d, but will almost immediately do so once the results screen is reached. This is probably due to either ensuring the game ends, or the game only ejecting once more data is needed (which the results screen would count as). Regardless, if you eject early enough, you can still Ban-Block before this point.
  • Unplugging the game (Wii U) counts as a complete (or literal) severance of data, as the game won't even view you as having fought the instigator of said ban. This can be good for conscience relief, however, this means that you won't be able to block them until you encounter them without Ban-Blocking (entering and exiting a match will register them).
Q/A
Q. What's the point of this? Why not just SD against a salty or annoying player?

A. It's an individual matter. Some people choose to SD, however, this could proliferate the problem by rewarding certain types of players with easy money wins, this provides people with more options in the event they are dissatisfied with the ones provided.
Q. Git Gud.
A. Ban-Blocking can be used for many situations, not just preventing a loss. Online Lag is a major problem, and Nintendo hasn't done enough to handle it, this allows the individual to properly neutralize those who play online with lag (whether deliberately or not), This problem is especially worse on For Fun, where SD'ing isn't a viable option. While we at the Ban-Blocking Research Committee (working name) understand that not everyone can afford or access quality WiFi services, ruining the experience of many for the pleasure of a few is a practice that we find to be unacceptable. If you agree, you now have safer and superior options to deal with it.
Q. What is the endgame for you all?
A. Our goal is to ensure a more flexible and enjoyable online experience for all people willing to accept it. Nintendo and Sakurai have worked rather hard to create a strict and rigid environment to accommodate the younger audiences, however, this is a practice which is highly unnecessary, as Basic Brawl, a mode with no rules and a slew of bugs was one of the most used features in Brawl, rivalring even Versus Mode offline.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
A. We plan to expand this project to not only Ban-Blocking Research, but also into other venues, such as CSS Swapping (for authentic Mii Fighters in Online) SSS Swapping (For Stage Selection in Online), and the removal of penalty-bans altogether (it's clientside, however we haven't yet found a way to modify it). We have much more planned in addition to this, so stay tuned!
Q. How do I join the Ban-Blocking Research?
A. It's starts with the individual! We have several people across many different Social Media and Smash-Related platforms spreading the info about Ban-Blocking (YouTube is a popular platform for this). Anyone can look into researching Ban-Blocking, however, if you want official recognition, Personal Message me with an application via Smashboards' Conversation Feature.

We greatly appreciate your time taken in reading this post and we are truly looking forward to making Smash Bros. Online into a better and more enjoyable experience for all players.

If someone is salty and DC's from a match, they get an automatic block&report from me. If you're gonna make me fight a CPU and waste my time cause you're a dink, you're getting a report.
