Some would argue that Nintendo's gaming market is saturated with Mario recently, and I agree, I mean getting four different New Super Mario Bros. games with only a short gap between them all, Super Mario 3d Land, Super Mario 3d World, and now Super Mario Maker, and that's not even counting spin off titles! Although, with the plethora of Mario games that have been coming out recently, I noticed one thing that is missing from the bunch, and that is a Super Mario 64 styled platformer. Sure, we have 3d Land and 3d World, and as great as they are, they felt too linear to me, where's the exploration from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, and to a lesser extent, the Galaxy games? I've loved Super Mario 64 since I was little, as have most people, and I am one of the few people who actually enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine and how open the world felt, with the linear platforming being tucked away for the "Secret" episodes. I think it would be nice to see a game like this again, where I'm exploring the world instead of just getting to the flag pole at the end, or collecting stars instead of just using them for a few seconds of invincibility. I'm also eager to see the kind of beautiful worlds they could create with the graphical capabilities of the wii U, especially considering what they were able to accomplish with Super Mario Galaxies one and two on the Wii. What do you guys think? Would you like to see more games like Super Mario 64 and the like?

Actual 3D Mario games are among my favorites to play so I would definitely look forward to one if it was announced. I, personally, don't see 3D Land and World as the same 3D Mario games as Sunshine, 64, and the Galaxy games since they have a more linear objective within each level. Regardless, all of them are very well made.

I have been waiting for a sequel to Super Mario 64 since I beat Super Mario 64. It is actually my favorite Mario title. I didn't care for Sunshine, as I felt it was too gimmicky. I didn't care for Galaxy, as I hated the camera and going upside-down on some of those planets would just make me annoyed. I loved that you had to revisit the same areas but try to explore new places in them to get all the stars.

I enjoyed galaxy 1 & 2 a lot... and I hold Galaxy 2 as my favorite Mario main series game so far. (My opinion, many will disagree and we are all allowed to like what we like.) but I have wanted a Mario 64 type game for a long time. There was something different and fun about the majority of levels being at least some what open world... ability to get stars in different orders (with some exceptions.)

So yea agreed... I want another one!

That would be awesome! I'd throw all my money at Nintendo to get another true 3D Mario game! That is, if Nook doesn't take it from me -_-

Another Galaxy game would be nice... But a game like 64 or Sunshine I'm just not interested in.

People complain about the filler in SMG, but it was waaaay worse in 64. In BOB alone, you have to climb up the mountain and fight a lame boss, climb up the mountain at a brisk pace, walk ten feet from the start and pound the Chomp's peg, walk fifteen feet from the start and shoot up to the sky island, walk fifteen feet and shoot to the sky island and fly through hoops, and shoot to the sky and climb the mountain and search every nook and cranny for coins, all separately. The areas were barely interesting twice... Six times was way too much.

SMS was better in this regard, but it instead made the actual exploration mostly pointless. Besides the secret shines and the god-awful blue coins there wasn't a point to go anywhere but the objective... Actually doing anything but going for the Shadow Mario stages felt like a waste of time because most of the secret shines (and blue coins) were just ridiculously unfun, like the dumb raft and the pachinko machine. The basic gameplay wasn't very interesting either. Sonic with a sword wasn't half bad compared to Mario with a squirt gun, to be honest. People always said the best parts of SMS were the linear platforming levels... It really shouldn't be a surprise that the next four 3D Marios built off of the part that people liked instead of what they didn't like.

I think the thing people liked about Super Mario 64 was the freedom it gave. There was place to roam around a stage, and you weren't required to get the star you picked at the start; you could go for another. That aspect was absent from Galaxy, and there weren't a lot of places where you could roam around, except the Honeyhive Galaxy and the Beach Bowl Galaxy.

In other words, the stages encouraged exploration.

64 did a pretty poor job rewarding exploration though... Being a Mario game the most you'll find is some coins and an extra life you'll never need. At least Heart Pieces were permanent. Grabbing a star almost felt like punishment in a way because you were booted from the level completely. Galaxy 2 replicated Whomp's Fortress well enough with half as many stars and a comet medal.

Exploration in Mario just feels pointless and unfun, next to SMW and SMG especially.

Eh, it was their first time doing working on a 3D platformer.

I enjoyed roaming around the stages, myself. They could add more secrets, NPCs and items to make it more rewarding. A lot of GTA and Skyrim players just roam around the world map without caring for objectives, for example. Something like that, maybe?

That's the thing though... 3D Mario evolved to include what made 2D Mario great and abandoned what 3D Mario was initially. Cat Mario with it's timer and small, linear levels is what they think 3D Mario should be now.

I don't really like the open world sandbox games either, but there's more things you can do in those games besides progressing the story or completing quests. You can mow down hookers and grannies or rob an entire village blind with buckets and things like that. With Mario the most you can do is throw baby penguin off a cliff. More collectable clutter is not what people want from Mario, and NPC in Mario are little more then switches for cannons or tollbooths to spend the plentiful and generic collectables on.

Mario doesn't really work in an open environment unless you made it significantly more complex, something they've been avoiding completely since SMS. SMS was, arguably, too complex for a Mario game to begin with.
