The idea behind this rule set is very simple, it's an iron man tournament that you draft your characters in (each set).

A basic ironman works by both players picking 3/5 etc characters and then striking to your 1st stage after double blinding your 1st characters. Once the stage has been selected it works like a crew battle, the winners keeps the same amount of stocks they had at the end of the last game. And if the loser wants a stage other than the stage they were on last, they can pick from the neutrals/pokemon stadium, if they change the stage then the defending player can switch to one of their other characters (essentially putting their current one back on the shelf with the same number of stocks).

What I hope to achieve with the draft iron man format is to promote more character variety, so that every team isn't; both spacies + X (x being one of the top 8)

the rules for drafting work like this; both players pick G&W and hammer to see who drafts first (higher number) and who strikes stages first (lower number).

The character select screen acts as a pool, so lets say the first player wants Fox in a 3 character bracket. That player grabs fox (Fox can now not be picked again!) and the rosters look like this;

player 1: Fox player 2: undecided
undecided undecided
undecided undecided

player 2 then gets to pick two characters. Lets say they grab Falco, and Sheik

player 1: Fox player 2: Falco
undecided Sheik
undecided undecided

From here player one gets to pick 2 characters, and then player 2 gets to choose 1. Simple.

I hope with this we will start to see more match up specific high/mid tiers show up like Pika/Luigi etc.

Yes I realize that first pick is a little bit of an advantage, but none the less let me know what you guys think!

I really enjoyed the Iron Man tournament we had at Salty Sunday a month or two ago, and the way you described the rules seem very appealing to me.
On another note. By side tournament do you think this could be run during a main event? Or as a tournament to be done afterwards.

I wish it was an actual event, but at first at least it would probably just be a side tourney, except in like OH. the cinci crew does some unique events =D

That's the point though Soap, this format forces you to learn and play multiple characters well. You would have to know matchups for at least 3 characters.

Like, Assuming I go second, I will most likely be playing falco, pika, ice climbers. or falco, pika, sheik

then, even though I main fox, I would be saving falco for fox, pika for marth, and ic's for sheik. or if I know the person has a good falcon, I would grab sheik instead of falcon. it requires A LOT of match up experience and preparation, that's why i love the idea!

judging by your character's listed our picks would go something like this

me 1st:

me:fox -> you: falco, falcon -> me: marth, sheik (I would only pick marth because I can CP FD, and because this forces you to dip into floaties or mid tiers) -> you: doc

you 1st:

you: falco -> me: fox, sheik (i don't pick marth here because you can get sheik AND falcon) -> you: marth, falcon -> me: pikachu (solid vs marth, fine vs falcon, can gimp falco). I go mid tier, and I am perfectly fine with that. =D
