New player trying to learn the game ~

Hello there !
I'm xShadius and I am a french Fighting Games enthusiast.
My story with smash begins with Brawl, I discovered the game by luck and I directly fell in love with it, as it combines Nintendo characters with Fighting Games mechanics, two of my favorite things. When Super Smash Bros. For 3DS/Wii U went out, I bought it right away, but never really tried to play the game seriously. But with Ultimate, it is different, I want to learn how to play.
I did not know where to start, so I thought I would come here in order to learn basics. I do not have a main character for now, there are so many choices it is hard to pick a character to start with, even though I love some of them more. For me, Ultimate is an occasion to improve myself overall, to find and push myself to my limits, and to meet new people !
For now, France is the only place where I can go for offline play, it is probably not much, but I am sure there are plenty of good people there, so it does not matter for me.
That is all ~

Hey man, I'm no full on pro on ultimate but I recommend spending a weekor two testing out every character. Once you find someone who suits you, focus most if not all of your time learning what they can do. Focusing on one main can make you get better faster but you can also have a secondary too. Once you understand your character you can go on youtube to find guides on getting better. I recommend practicing short hops, fast falls, and starting set-ups for potential combos

Hey there ! ~
OK, I will do it. I still have a question: I struggle hard with short hops, and I don't feel comfortable with my actual controller (it's a regular switch controller with a wire and some Mario Party drawing on it). Do you think it will be easier to input things with a GameCube controller ? (I ask because in France it is nearly impossible to find a gamecube controller AND an adapter, well, for a reasonable price). Thank you for the answer by the way !

For short hops (I'm assuming you have stick jump off) it doesn't really matter how hard or light you press it as long as you let go of it fast. Holding the button too long will make it a full hop so you need to make sure that you let go of it the second you press it.
I also recommend getting a gamecube controller but if you can't it makes sense. They're extremely hard to find and where I live, finding an adaptor is like searching for hidden treasure. You could try finding wired or wireless gamecube controllers which arent as great but they dont require an adaptor and should be easier to find. They can also let you get an idea of how to play with a gcc until you get the chance to get one yourself.

Thank you very much, I was struggling with how to perfectly input short hops, I thought I had to touch the button just a little at first.
Well I think I can get both the controller and the adapter, it should not be that difficult where I live. Again, Thanks for the tips !
