Hey there, I just bought a Wii U and am starting to play Smash 4. Of course, I'd like to be good some day, but for now I'm just playing to have fun and improve!

I have a Wii U and the game itself. Do I need anything else? A controller?

Well there are many controller options: Wii Remote, Nunchuck, Wii U Pro Controller, GameCube Controller, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Plus, Nintendo 3DS. At least, those are what I can think of. If you want the GameCube controller, you'll have to buy an adapter for it, but they appear to be sold out in most places currently. A lot of people are gravitating toward the Wii U Pro Controller (doesn't require adapter), but that's $50 or so. Wii Remote should be the cheapest option though, unless you already have 3DS.

You also may want to purchase an amiibo of one of your mains, so you can train it and then it learns from you and counters your fighting style, but only get it if you don't mind losing. It also gains strength naturally leveling up even if no equipment is fed and the AI may not always make the smartest choices...

Edit: Oh, and welcome to Smashboards, hub for all us crazy Smash fans. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

If you want to get good at the game, and in addition to all of PSIBoy's sound advice, I'd suggest familiarising yourself with the various characters available and finding your main(s) if you haven't already. That'll help you figure out where to go from here and give you a greater appreciation for the finer, more technical elements of the game.

I should add you can also use the Gamepad as a controller. It gets more comfortable as you play, trust me eheheh~

Doh, knew there was something I forgot. Also, once you think you found a main(s), go on Smashboards and look up the character in the character section. There should be information regarding gameplay and whatnot in there (except for Mewtwo currently).

The first character I played with is Yoshi, so I think I'll be playing him a lot. I'd like to figure out one more to have as a secondary. I'll figure that out when I get back from my field op on Friday. Yeah, I bought the game, now I have to be away from home for 4 days :c

Your best option is the gc controller but since all the adapters are sold out id go for the pro controller.

Get a Wii U Pro controller or a GameCube controller with an adapter. As for finding characters to play as in terms of mains (I see you already found Yosh,) and secondaries, just play a lot of Vs. opponents against the CPU to kind of get a feel for them. Start with characters that look interesting, and if you play as all the interesting ones and don't find a match, then move on over to the ones that didn't strike you as interesting your first time though.

After that, practice. If you can find people you can play with, then that is much better. If not, try grabbing an Amibo and level it up. They make great sparring partners, and can teach you how to play defensively.

Ok so I had a $50 gift card to Walmart and I bought a Fight Pad for Wii U and a Yoshi Amiibo. I just got back from the field today so hopefully I can get in some good practice this weekend :D

Edit: I'm an idiot and I bought the Fight Pad...but no Wii Remote to plug it into -_-... So I'll have to get that tomorrow. I'm a dumb.
