new player looking for tips

i've started playing ultimate (which is actually my first smash game), and even though i'm definitely not looking to play competitive or online or anything, im trying to collect characters in adventure mode and i feel really weak. it's mainly because i use kirby, but i can't seem to get used to other characters since they require more "skill" and i've only been playing since yesterday. does anybody maybe have any tips or tricks to get used to other characters faster? would it be smarter to just practice using smash mode? thanks
