After listening to some top players it seems that controllers are very important, and believing westballz, can limit a player. So my question is when do you know to get a new controller and where? I'm guessing I need a new one since Ive been using the same one for 10 years now.

i would say you only would need a new one if you notice it hindering you in your play, now for instance the newer controllers tend to shield drop better and more consistently than older controllers, It would definitely pertain to how comfortable and effective the controller is for you, and if you notice that things you used to be able to do easily or more consistently that you cant do now than id say you may need a new one, as stick boxes/ potentiometers can become worn out and less sensitive then they used to be. The new smash controllers are great and only 20 bucks once they become worn in, if you have issues with not liking the way the bumpers click in i would just take the board out of the new smash controller and put it in your current shell, because going from your 10yr old controller to the smash4 one you will easily notice the shoulders feel very different even after the 5 months if wear on my sm4sh controller my platinum triggers Still feel much smoother , anyways hope that helps!

Try a bunch of different controllers, or ask some other players if you can try their. You will know if your controller is good or not, and when you'll buy a new controller you will know if it's good. You can also buy several and switch the parts you feel are better. That's what I did and I now have a few great controllers to play with friends. You can find them for pretty cheap on craiglist and the likes, often in good shape. Or in video game stores. You can even get the new ones, there are a few for sale on the smashboards shop.

Maybe a small cleanup could be enough actually, since dirt tend to get inside the controller and block the buttons. Get a tri-wing screwdriver* and a Q-tips and clean the dirty dirt, the button holes and everything and it should be more fluid. Cheetos powder tend to be especially invasive, I found some on the rumble pack at the back of the controller lol.

*If you don't know where to get a good one pm me.
