Hey guys, I'm pretty new to TOing in general, but I think I've come up with a new system that could work really well for competitive sm4sh. Basically, I feel like that since there are now so many viable characters and the addition of some new characters, the game has become much more counterpick oriented. These rules are still in beta, and I haven't actually attempted implementing them with any tournaments yet. I play a lot of dota so I figured setting up a mini drafting mechanic to the competitive meta could work really well.
Basically at the beginning of the tournament each entrant must declare a pool of characters that they can choose from throughout the tournament. Currently I'm leaning towards 6 characters per pool, thinking about 3 character pools too.
6 Pool Character Strike Phase:
Occurs before stage strike
Ban/Pick priority determined by coin toss or rps or port priority or whatever you determine to be fair. Winner gets to choose whether to ban first or pick second.
First Ban comes out for first player, then second player
Second Ban comes out for first player, then second player
Pick comes out from first player, second player counterpicks
Winner of first match stays with the character they won with, bans 2 from losers roster (can't ban the same characters as first turn)
Loser picks
Rinse and repeat as necessary
3 Pool Character Strike Phase:
Same thing but each player only ever gets 1 ban instead of 2.
Anyway, any suggestions yall could make to make the rules more fair would be appreciated, I've tried to sort of balance the inherent priority advantage, but it could probably still use some work. I feel like this system could have a lot of potential, but just needs to be fleshed out for the best results.
