New competitive player question

Hey everyone,

I am fairly new to competitive smash, and I practice with a friend on an occasion. He mains as Fox, while I main as Marth. When we are playing as well as when I watch streams, I often hear, "You missed the tech" or "he missed the tech". I am not aware of what this means. If someone would define "tech" for me, I would greatly appreciate that.

Thanks!

you know when you hit the ground you just lay there for a bit? you can either get up, get up and attack, or get up by rolling left or right? well, you will only lay down if you "miss the tech". if you press L or R right before you hit the ground, you can immediately roll without waiting. if you still don't understand i can make a video

Jesus!,

Thanks for the reply! I was unaware that you could press L or R before hitting the ground to roll. This answers my question, thanks!

OK, so I feel this needs to be clarified. There are two types of "tech", the first is the mechanic mentioned by Jesus!, and the second is what is being referred to by 20XXwingleborgXxx. The second type of tech is anything that requires technical ability on the player's part to execute, and Advanced Tech is something that requires more advanced technical ability to execute. Examples of tech and advanced tech are short hops, L-Cancels, wavedashes, etc.
