Neutral Jab Instead of Side Smash on Pro Controller?

I've been having this problem for a while now where I get neutral jab instead of a side smash when using the c-stick on the pro controller. It's bizarre, and downright frustrating when you're trying to read a roll or punish something. Anyone else have this problem? And is there any way to fix it?

Usually happens when you do a diagonal input on the C-stick,

You have to avoid diagonal inputs. Also, I have found a few times I think I started a jab when I was already trying to execute an attack, so I might be wrong but I think the stick isn't good with buffering commands either.
