Smash Champion
Nethack, a very old PC game. Like, OLD old. Nonetheless it is extremely cool. And fun. And absorbing.
So... guessing that many of you have never heard of Nethack, I am going to give you an overview. Nethack is a rougelike, and one of the best, too. The scenario is this: you are any one of several roles and races, along with a pet. Your task is to navigate a huge randomly generated dungeon in the attempt to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor. It's a lot of fun. It's also one of the most difficult RPGs ever made. It's not uncommon to hear of people who have played for years without winning a game. A game? What do I mean by that? Don't you just play through until you reach the end? In short... yes and no. Yes, you do need to play through this long game until you reach the end. The difference between Nethack and modern RPGs is that in Nethack, death is permanent. Once your character dies, you need to start up a new one: you can't go back to your last save and continue. If you are killed on the very last dungeon floor, you stilll must go back to the beginning and redo it all. And there's plenty of ways to die! Fortunately, for the well prepared player, you can solve any problem... IF you prepare. So without further ado, the Nethack Guidebook and the download of the game itself. Note: Nethack is open source.
Have fun.
