In this wanghole of an update, something interesting DID appear.

He says that 'until now i've included handicaps in this game'...then updates that handicaps are returning.

and before you lock this thread, could you please post why? Don't say 'Ness thread' because there are like 50. No disrespect meant, seems like most threads that may in some way involve an update get locked the next day...

yeah I agree... seems like an error in translation.

it must mean that, yes, it has appeaed in every smash before this one... but it doesn't speak at all to whether it will continue or not.

As for ness, the fact that lucas stole all his moves really lowers his chances of being a separate character... as for being an alternate outfit... who knows?

Resurrected.
This is interesting. I suppose it must be awkward to translate that particular phrase from Japanese to English.

Well handicap has changed now (it's adding percentage instead of changing power) so in a way the previous way of handicap is no more.

Hence the "until now". This does not hurt or help Ness' status.

Dictionary. com translates the infamous "up until now" to "which had appeared in former"... it translates today's update similarly: "...even in the former series"

Im not going to get my hopes ridiculously high, but this definitely does help the "it was a weird translation" case for Ness.

Yeah the until now is the only thing that deconfirmed ness, the "sakura whanted to take out ness in Melee and replace him with Lucas" and the moves don't decoonfirm ness.

no, while it's true that there are MANY things making Ness's chances as a playable character unlikely at best, the fact that sakurai never said that he wounldn't be in brawl leaves the door open for other options... I'm thinking an alternate outfit myself, but there are some other options, like AT.

Nook Sindrome all over again.
not remotely... I'm not at all diluded that he will become a PC... at least not a stand alone PC. I'm just saying that his overwhelming similarity in all ways to lucas makes him a likely outfit change

No dude this is Nook syndrome an every regard. When you have to find loop holes and literary inconsistancies just to say he is possible....then you know it's the nook syndrome. He hasn't a shot, no matter what anyone wans to believe.

It's not really directed at you, but the public in general, Ness should be an alt. costume and/or an AT, but it's completly stupid to give ness's moves to Lucas and make a new moveset for Ness, instead of making a new moveset for Lucas.

even if handicap changed he still shouldn't say handicap was in every series until now, after all it's still called a handicap now.

See? I told people not to so sure about this until now that deconfirmed ness but they didn't listen.

If you were reading todays update

"So until now, I’ve always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series"

Someone reading this would think handicaps were no longer to be included, theres no other way about it, that's what you would think.

But they are included, So Ness is far from deconfirmed

HELL YEAH. I taught the same thing. And yes i still know his chances for brawl are still slim but theres at least a small glimmer of hope in a sea of darkness and i will shut my self in denial with that in mind.

agreed... though if he's an alt outfit, I wouldn't want him to be an AT too... that wuld be just weird..... then again, Doc was a character in melee despite mario being a character and they are the same person so I guess you can't really predict anything like that... and I suppose that if sakurai puts Toad in, then the same thing would occur because he'd be both a charcter and part of someone else's character...

still I'd rather ness and lucas just be alt outfits for the samce character and that be that

Why do you think it was the "until now" that deconfirmed Ness?
Proabably since I've been seeing "until now" mentioned by a lot of people and seeing them in sigs.

when you think about it, take out "up until now" from lucas's moves update and theres nothing really to say ness is deconfirmed (for definite anyway)

no... those were just thought to be the final nail in his coffin.... now his coffin has one less nail, but it's still nailed shut just as well

In reality it doesn't bother me that much that ness is out its the possibility that there will yet again be only one earthbound/mother series representative.

Seeing threads like this really hurts my faith in the average intelligence of humanity... *facepalm...*

It's almost like the average Christian picking and choosing excerpts from the Bible to live by instead of taking the whole thing in.

The up until now part was referring to the handicap he'd included in the previous smashes. He goes on to say a very important few words.

"But, I began to think that there isn’t much thrill in just making yourself weaker, so I changed the system."

The until now means the same thing. The handicap has been changed to a percentage based system, and Ness has been changed to Lucas.

Uh...

Alright seriously...wtf...

Guys, first off, there the whole fact that Ness was never supposed to be in SMASH BROS 64, but because of the Mother for 64 being canned, they had to go with a character that was, y'know, existent. Second off, there's the whole fact that Ness was supposed to be removed in Melee, but time constraints said otherwise. Finally, the until now thing simply means what it says.

So until now, I’ve always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series.

But, I began to think that there isn’t much thrill in just making yourself weaker, so I changed the system.
If anything, this proves now, more than ever, that Ness is gone. He changed the Mother rep from Ness to Lucas, just like he changed the handicap from weakening attack to raising starting damage, and I believe this update is actually hinting at that.

What's everyone so pissed about Ness being gone anyways? His non-specials were weak and very much not cool, and those PK powers were never his anyways. You'd know that if you'd actually play Mother. Lucas is a very cool and interesting dude (he has a freakin' faux-hawk thing! How awesome is that?) with his proper psychic powers, not to mention mentally powered A moves, who actually had a personality in his game, and was going to be in 64 and Melee anyways. Face it, Ness is gone. Just except it, seriously...

*phew* i thought, after the 1st few posts that this thread wasn't going to have any sense.
turned good 1/2 way through page 2.

ness is gone, this helps the case of NESS GOING not of ness returning.
as the system has changed "until now" is still exclusive of brawl.

no longer is the old system in, therefor "until now" excludes brawl.

People outside of Japan actually know who Ness is?

I actually want both Lucas and Ness in the game. That hardly looks likely at the moment, but it's ******** to use three words as an entire bases for Ness being deconfirmed, or vice versa. ESPECIALLY when said three words only showed up in the English translation, though whether that has any significance or not remains to be seen. I'd take Lucas over Ness simply because Lucas has far more of a personality than Ness, yet the game shouldn't entirely be Mother 3 representation, especially since America will probably only ever get Earthbound.

And don't say that music is a proper substitute, because stuff like SNOWMAN is already remixed in Mother 3. Mother 3 nearly has every Mother and Mother 2 theme, so anything music wise by extension would still be a reference to M3.

It says "until now" in Japanese too. Ask Samurai Panda, or watch Show Me Your News, episode "Through The Foxes And The Flames", when he translates it, at 50:14

The handicaps are completely different from one another. Or at least...as different as say Lucas and Ness. I think this only further proves Ness is out.

I wonder if the Ness people even want Mother 3 to be released in the States. Lucas is the gateway to it.
