There has been speculation to whether Ness will be returning, and/or if he will be replaced with Lucas. Who do you prefer? I prefer Lucas. I think his moves would be much more interesting.

I say Ness because he's been there from the beginning and Brawl wouldn't be the same without him.

I prefer Ness, because he was in the original 12 and I would have never heard of Earthbound/Mother if he wasn't in.

I would prefer both as well. Earthbound is a little underrepresented.

i prefer ness also just becuase his been there since the begining but i also agree with andrew why not both because last time ness didnt have another character from his series in melee

Both. I do think there is a huge chance both will get in, and I'm almost sure Lucas is in, either way.

the franklin badge uses its promotional mother 3 design. not to mention I believe sakurai stated there would be mother 3 music. lucas is practiacally a shoo-in. ness will likely be in as well.

I'd prefer Ness since I'm familiar with him... and since he's been in Smash since the beginning, but after reading up of Mother3 (Which looks like an interestingly dark game for nintendo), Lucas seems great, also. But, in my opinion, Lucas is DEFINITELY in. Mainly because this is the only other main character in the Mother series besides Ninten... who looks exactly like Ness, anyway.
And since they are using another item from the Mother series, it seems they are expressing more interest to it. So... what's better than a new character?

WTF with the alternate custome thing? It's fine for Mario and Doctor Mario, cause they are the same person, but Lucas and Ness are different.

Atleast Lucas' Final Smash is easy to guess... PK Love 
My personal guess: Lucas will replace Ness, and Lucas will be a tweaked version of Ness (an ungimping, if you will). In other words, Lucas will be a clone of Ness, just in a different game (as opposed to just changing Ness directly into Lucas without any move changes)

Personally, I'd love to see BOTH Ness and Lucas. I believe they can co-exist. Sakurai has proven that he can take obscure character concepts and run with them for the touchdown like an all-star quarterback. I believe they can have both Ness and Lucas, and after seeing Pokemon Trainer, I believe they've got what it takes to make Lucas a unique character.
Plus, most people that argue that Lucas would play like Ness has obviously never watched videos of battles from Mother 3, let alone played the game. It wouldn't be particularly difficult to work in some of the battle aspects from Mother 3 into Lucas to make him different.

Ness doesn't have his own moves he stole paula's somehow.
Its obvious Sakurai just put Ness in there because he had a unique idea for a moveset just like with c.falcon.
I do believe that something like clones are possible but i'd rather bet my previos idea will happen.
Whatever the case Sakurai is a bit too random with his work so its hard to predict what will happen, which is why you should look forward to the suprise.

... lucas will have 2 of the costumes, the main one and another...
Ness will also have 2...
the 5th one will be paula or sumthing like that.

the reason why lucas will be the main selection is cause in japan Mother 3 was one of the most anticipated game for 2006 and japan was waiting for a mother game for like 10years. lucas has more hype.... but ness will be in as a costume because he is a veteran.

The franchise has evolved. Ness should be an alternate outfit or not to be playable at all, but the point is that MOTHER 3 needs the spotlight of the MOTHER series. MOTHER 2 is old, using the same character and stages of the same series as these were the only ones around.
Ness and Lucas are very similar. We can argue about minor issues and stats but the truth is Lucas and Ness fit the same "MOTHER main hero" profile: Both of them use sticks/bats and yo-yos. Both share a lot of PSI. Both have very similar stats. But Lucas allow a lot of more interesting events and situations, I'll be extremely disappointing to play the same "Ness vs Invaders!" stuff again and again.

Ness is one of the original 12 characters and hails from a game that was a cult classic all across the world. Conversely, everyone outside of Japan is barred from playing Mother 3 at all because they refuse to translate it for some reason. Taking out Ness and replacing him with Lucas would be awfully disrespectful to non-Japanese gamers from my perspective. I'm not against Mother 3 content in general, since there's nothing wrong with having some Japan-only content and the Mother series is popular, but Ness should stay. Then again, if they DID replace him with Lucas, the resulting outcry might be enough to force them to translate Mother 3 after all... It worked for Fire Emblem, didn't it?

GASP! You don't like Lucas? As much as I love Ness, I think Lucas is cooler. Oh well. Time will tell who makes it in. Honestly Earthbound has been given the shaft in general. I think they both deserve a spot.
