So, I drew Ness (it's not quite done yet and maybe I'll update it when I it is finished if you guys want me to) to help me wish my Girlfriend a Happy Birthday tomorrow. Tell me what you guys think. It's a large poster board, even if it doesn't look like it, and when I finish, it'll open up to another picture of Ness and a surprise character :p

P.S. If this doesn't belong in this thread, you can move it. I just figured that it has to do with Ness so, why not?

---------------------------------------
Update!
I'm going to the dinner in which I will present it to her. In addition, I have finished it (obviously) and here is the rest, guys! Tell me what you think :D

Warning, facepalm-inducing pun ahead.

After opening, Ness gets pushed away by.... ME! In Mother character style! ;]

Everything:

P.P.S. I know I messed up on some areas, but that's due to procrastination and or hastiness.

UPDATE AGAIN!

Well, here you go guys. With all the support, I decided to show the first batch of my sketches earlier. Sorry for the crappy quality. Personally, I like the one on Sketch 4 the best. I'd love to hear feedback from you guys! Can't wait!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! And yeah, she loves Mother :] though she hasn't played as much of it as others have.

Anyways, yeah, she's going to be playing with me (and online) when we both get SSBB on launch day ;]. I'm lucky I know.

But yeah, if you guys didn't notice, I updated my post with the final half of the picture. It's a shame I couldn't color it, the material the poster was made of wouldn't really allow good coloring.

She pretty much flipped. She was laughing and grinning at it for a while as she examined it.

And, to put my fears to rest, she knew that it was not Lucas, but me, who was pushing Ness out of the way. She really liked it! She put it in her room, against the wall, and is planning on displaying it somewhere but isn't sure how, yet.

Y'know, it got me thinking, I was actually somewhat impressed by how it turned out (which rarely happens with my own artwork). Maybe I should draw mini-comics or something with Ness. Or if I get better, maybe even Earthbound crossing with other SSBB characters. I don't know if I'm good enough yet but it sounds interesting. I love the Mother series but I don't know enough about it and might get something wrong, which is one of my fears if I do draw more of it. Yeah, I don't know. Tell me what you guys think?

Hahahaha. Wow. :p
Thanks though, I appreciate it. It's nice to hear that I might actually have some support for this. Consider this project in progress if a couple more people think it's a good idea. I think what I'll do, is make a couple of sheets with Ness in different artwork styles and I'll ask people here to vote for which one they think would be best.

I am glad that your girlfriend like your Ness picture.

About Ness art styles, I was hoping you could do the Americanized tall version of Ness.

Vs

I like the first version of Ness better. The taller one. Don't you think? I don't like the version of Ness depicted in Smash series with him being like a ****** with a huge head.

In the Americanized version, Ness and Paula are both tall and the same height as each other. Poo and Jeff though are short, like up to the shoulder height of Ness and Paula.

I hope you could draw one of those images where Ness and Paula are kissing or something. I was hoping for a romantic scene, I've always wanted to see that when Earthbound came along but Paula was a wuss she said she wanted to tell Ness something at the very end but then she said she forgot. Nothing sexual though because they're kids and you might get banned or something.

As for art styles, I saw some good ones over at Starmen.net you could take inspiration from. But I figure you want to do it your own style so that is good :)

Here are some that I like:
http://files.fobby.net/0000/33fc/Savior.jpg

http://files.fobby.net/0000/33b0/Ness and Paula in Peaceful Rest Valley.jpg

http://files.fobby.net/0000/1f4d/artemisff02.jpg

This one here is a really good one:
http://files.fobby.net/0000/0b73/paulacapture.jpg

Another really good one:
http://files.fobby.net/0000/27d8/paula25done.JPG

If you could draw your pictures similar to one of these I think it'd be cool. Especially that last two.

Hey thanks for the extended response, Kiki. [:

But yeah, I'd probably hit for something between the Japanese and the Americanized version that you showed me [:. I agree, Ness does look slightly midgety. I like the height of the figurine Ness that you showed first but I'll probably change the eyes, the hair and the hat [: I like the hair in the middle of his head, he looks more... I don't know. I just think he looks better with the hair in the middle; it captures more of the essence of Ness that I've always imagined him. It's hard to explain haha.

Another supporter? Sweet [:
It's ridiculously hard to draw on that surface with a pen..

But I'm flattered you think I'm that talented, though I still think I'm only a mediocre artist. Ness is just fun and easy to draw. We'll see how things go. I'll continue practicing drawing in the Smash Bros. realm if you guys want.

Sorry to let you down, but I usually suck at everything I try to do..
And to Kiki52, I must say.. The first Ness I saw was from SSBM, so I don't really like that "Americanized" version of him, but that's just my own opinion.

But On-Topic now.. Those pictures were amazing.. How long it took to make those?

I'm sure you are good at somthing FinNess, all Ness players are, as Earthbound08 said. I, for example, am good at putting up senseless and meaningless arguements (this isn't one of them). Plus, I don't really like the americanized version. I prefer Ness small, compacted,... sexy. Perhaps we should take a vote or something. Of course, it would be your decision though Herbie. But ya, that Ness you drew was hella pimp so i think you should keep drawing em like that.

What, the mega-chibi version? Haha. Yeah, perhaps. Look out tomorrow night, I'll have the sketches (or at least half of them) up for you guys to look at. I wouldn't mind a vote either. I know it's my decision but I love your guys' input. Quite frankly, I'm already stoked that you guys even like the art.

Give me your guys' friends codes "fah'sho" kay? Can't wait to play some of you guys come March 9. 5 More days until Midnight release day.

Ye well if you start thinking it so deeply, everyone is actually good in something (that sure sounded like a movie cliché :p).
And being good at something may depend also, on what do you compare to yourself..

Oh crap. I didn't see that part of your post, I'm sorry I didn't answer it.

Well, because I had to make sure I didn't mess up, it being in pen and all, it took way longer than expected. Overall, counting only how long I actually worked on it, it probably took 2 or 3 hours. I think that is also partly because of how large the drawings were. As I grow more comfortable with drawing Ness, it should be really quick to draw a single image of him.

@PK Starstorm
I'm a huge fan of the cinematography and action scenes, similar to Japanese style (you know, flashy, quick, unrealistic but makes a ridiculously huge impact of smoothness and power. Oh, and combos that defy physics. Afterall, it's not real, so why be bound by boring looking realistic physics? ;]). A good example of this is the fighting style of the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, one of my favorite 2d fighters ever, or FF: Advent Children. Hell, I barely watched that but I loved the action. So, yes, I do plan on adding a lot of PSI. A lot, indeed.

Anyways, cant wait to get my sketches up on here to hear what you guys think.

P.S. I love your name, FinNess. Very nice [:

I have noticed also, that when I draw something for the first time, it takes a while (and I usually have to use a model), but after few drawings, I can do one without thinking about it much too much. Though I always draw on a normal A4 paper, and the drawings are something between 4 and 10cm's long.

What's so lovable about my name :D
Just threw my nationality's abbreviation and my main together. :p

Aww, thanks LittleKey, I think that sometimes too ;]

And FinNess, I thought you were going for the play on words that you possessed finesse. Hahaha. A word which explains why I think it's so cool.

Ahh haha.. That explains a bit :D
Haven't even thought it about like that myself.
Edit: Checked finesse from a dictionary.. It gave me a laugh :D
Edit2: Looked at your new sketches, and in my opinion (too) #4 looks the best, I also like the one which is prepared for a battle, and #3..

Arright. Thanks, FinNess [: And yeah. You should use that new meaning of Finesse as your idea in mind when you introduce your name ;] It's awesome.

And thanks. Yeah. My second batch of sketches are actually going to have more action. Probably going to have a two/three panel comic of Ness performing PKT2 just as a test. How does that sound?

Any news yet about that? Because I'd really like to see how that looks..

A bit off topic but, I drew Fox aiming at Falco with his blaster yesterday, with their SSBM looks taken from the trophies awarded from Adventure mode (except Falco's hands. :ohwell:). My brother says that Fox looks like a dog in that drawing tho  In my opinion it looks fine anyway.
Took a total of ~45min to make that..
If someone wants, I can see if I can get my camera to work and upload the picture here.
EDIT: Uploaded,
click the blue thing to see.....^

I'd still say that I ain't good at anything, but if the statement is changed to "Different from average people" ( <-- not intended to offend anyone) then it would suit me, because I'm left handed.. :p

Nice job on the card. It's obvious you put time into something like that, and i'm sure your GF will keep that card for many years to come, even if you two break up. It's definitely a sweet gesture

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. And yeah, if you want to upload that picture of Fox and Falco that'd be great.

Wow, it's been a while since I've been here. The game is just too good.
Speaking of which, anyone who I've been talking to want to play a match one day? I'd be happy to play with some people on here that I've chatted with.

Friend code should be in my Sig. Just need yours ;]

Also, I have some other drawings of Ness I'll upload soon, I've just been so caught up in playing the actual game haha.

Great work man, you definitely have talent. As a fellow artistically-inclined person, there is just something about the simplicity and cleanliness of good pen/pencil linework that I just love. And you should definitely pursue that comic idea you mentioned, that would be really cool. I myself would love to do some stuff from the SSB universe once I have the time, its such a great source for reference material.

Oh and if you are looking for people to play Brawl online with, feel free to add me, I have plenty of spots on my friend list left to fill. :)

Be sure to add me, BulletzBill, I will be adding you as soon as I arrive home. Though, you living in New York may pose a problem. Anyways, I am a fan of your art already and thank you for your encouragement. We'll see how things go [:

Definitely great stuff. If all Ness users are talented, what do I got? Does being left-handedness, amedextris (with my legs; I always own at soccer and b-ball for that! :D), knowing how to wake board, or the ability to smack controllers out of people's hands as epic mind games count as a "talent"? I definitely think the later is a pure-breed skill!

And that DK poster was spot on, especially to the best and really "original" DK in Donkey Kong Country DK. That was spot on FANTASTIC, especially for what you consider to be a fast draw. I used to be a somewhat good artist. I even drew a picture of Meta Knight, Kirby, Wind Waker Link, Wario (I actually was drawing Mario, but I was quick enough to change it, since Wario fit better!), Diddy Kong, and King Dedede fighting on Delfino Plaza in 2003 in the "next smash". Looks like Sakurai stole my picture, because I can't find it, and they're all in Brawl! Maybe I should brush up on my Megaman drawing skills...that I never had!

All in all, really great work. That's one of the best DK drawings I've ever seen. :)

Yay for left handers.

Epic mindgame indeed, I've tried doing something like that to my brother. Turned my wavebird onto his channel and ran off the stage

Thanks. Good to hear that there's atleast someone who likes my work.

Woow.. That has to be the biggest coincidence I've heard of. If Sakurai didn't actually steal that from you.:rotfl:

I see where you're aiming in there. :p
All in all, really great work. That's one of the best DK drawings I've ever seen. :)

Hah, if it's any related news, my friend's sister cosplayed as Ness to the melee tourney me, her, him and another friend went to, and it was neat giving people the most exciting match they've seen with a Ness mirror match. It was leading up to Brawl's release, and guess what first prize was, a copy of it and AW: Days of Ruin. I came in fourth... lucky *******... We showed off all of Ness' best tricks in melee. She didn't look too shabby either... But yes, good show man! Get her to do the same! Female tanktop Ness is quite win.
