Need some info/assistance in replicating this Metroid Prime 2: Echoes graphic effect...

So in the final battle of MP2, Dark Samus engulfs herself in a big, blue ball of transparent Phazon energy- you can see thru it and she remains visible. I can't replicate this at all in game and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how it can be done.

Probably something with alpha, but I don't do any of this myself.
