Knowing when you're L-Canceling with fox can be tricky when first starting out with him, especially if you're used to playing characters where the animations make big differences whether or not you L-Cancel.

I got a feel for Fox's L-Cancel by going to practice mode, setting the speed to 2/3 or slower, and zooming in all the way on Fox using the C-Stick. From that viewpoint, you should be able to see the effects of Fox's L-Cancel and get a better feel for it. Once you're accustomed to that, try moving onto 1x speed, still zoomed all the way in, and L-Canceling with all the aerials. It also helps if you try an aerial without L-Canceling then L-Canceling when trying the aerial again right after, so that you can look for any significant changes between the two landings.

Like anything in Melee though, SHFFLing skill can only be improved through practice, especially with a character like Fox.

One good way you can tell, is shining after your aerials. Just do an aerial, and after you try to l-cancel, try to shine. If your shine comes out NEARLY instantly after you touch the ground/try to l-cancel, you probably did it. If it takes a moment for the shine to come out... you probably didn't.

Go to youtube and look up the Advanced how to play Melee videos (I believe they were done by Wako).

Jumping is personal preference, most players use X or Y to jump if you do not already. If you were open to suggestions, I suggest using Y for a little bit easier use with Fox. But for all intents and purposes their are plenty of pro players that use X or Y.

Check the regional boards or make a post in the regional boards for finding players in your area. If I knew your location I could point out which board you would be looking for.

Easiest way for most people is Control Stick / X for jump, C stick or A (for neutral) for aerials.
When doing the FFL part, almost a split second after hitting down, hit L. Or R. Or Z.

Go to training mode and do dairs or nairs and then shine. It will show u if u did it, just look at the combo meter or w.e. And its wave dashing not wave dance. Same deal.
