Well, I play as Fox, and Fox only no one else. I normally only play my friend Chris who uses Link, and his brother who plays as Mario. We don't use SHFFLin' or any 'pro' techniques mostly because we can't do them very well. I just wanted tips on how to play with him without using those and be a good player.

Don't listen to those above.
It is possible to play stronger w/o advanced techniques, but eventually, you'll master those techs and use them too. (and i'd like to think that i am a very technical fox)
The key is to play smarter. Try to read your opponent. Out space & time them. One thing to do is to spam the laser in the air, full hop triple laser since you can't shl/ shdl. This will make them have to come to you. At this point, you have the advantage because they have to come to you and you can punish them. Make them miss their approach and own them in the face. Since they don't play advanced yet, use the shield grab, if you can shield usamsh. Make liberal use of the uthrow>uair combos/juggles. Try to juggle them. The key is to try to out-think them and to out-play them.

Over time & practice, you'll master the more advanced techniques and integrate them into you're game, but focus on your mental game now.

Practice keeping your focus on your opponents character, using your peripheral vision to see where you are in relation to them. You don't need to see what you are doing, you know what you are doing, put your focus on the other character. This will help you to out-think / out-play them.

Finally, remain confident. Don't fell down or bad. Learn from your mistakes, try not to fall into patterns, mix it up.

You won't become a good player w/o some advanced techniques, but you can improve.

I'm giving this advice both from how i remember playing, and from the mistakes that i have (and still do) made. Hope this helps.

Don't dash attack and roll endlessly. The two things newer players do most is dash attack and their only approach and roll away in response to attacks. Avoid doing those. Odds are you can read when they're going to roll after a bit when it becomes predictable so do so and punish accordingly. But, yeah, dash attacks tend to be laggy, slow and lacking in damage and combo potential so refrain from spamming them. Fox is blessed with a useable dash attack, but having said that it's not wise to use it over and over and over again.

Dash attack to U-tilt is your friend when you do use dash attack if you're not going to SHFFL but if you're not going to SHFFL then I'd avoid approaching if possible (obviously sometimes you will have to approach but meh). Basically, force them to come to you. Full jump triple laser a lot and u-throw u-air a lot.

Some of his easier movement tricks would be worth learning like Fox-trotting, which is useful for getting in grabs, which lets you do your U-throw U-air crap. It also tacks on a lot of speed to your Fox. Dash dancing is lovely and fairly easy and leads into grabs and whatnot. Dash cancelling is also something I'd recommend learning because it's easy and helps you approach on the ground if you're not going to do so in the air. It also makes chasing rolls easier.

But you're going to find it very, very hard to play him well simply because Fox is an extremely technical character.

Like everyone else said your going to have to rely on foresight, mind games and the such with out any adv tech

However, the fact that you have two other friends who play with you will greatly help you improve. IF you all try and learn advance techniques I guarantee you'll notice a huge difference in your game.

Take it slow is what I have to say. Learn one advance technique at a time. Start off with short hopping, or maybe something even more simple like shield grabbing.

I remember when my friends started learning advance techniques, it was coincidently a time when I stopped playing with them. A year later most of them were able to kick my ***. It wasn't so much because I was rusty, but it was because I was so predictable and their moves were so much more efficient.
