Need Help With Falco

Well, I've had Melee for years now, but I started using advanced techniques about a month ago.

I'm still having a bit of trouble with Falco.

I can never seem to get the timing right with l - cancels. On top of that, I can't really tell when I do it right.

I'm also having problems with combos, especially with the shine. I can usually shine pretty well, but I don't know what to do (combo wise) once they're in the air...

Try shining, jabbing, jumping, whatever after you l cancel, should come out almost immediately. Combos and timing come with practice. Just keep working at it, you're only a month in, you will get better even if it doesn't seem like it, me and a lot of others went through it too.

For L-cancelling, (here i go again) the L/R buttons need to be pressed in farther (only one of them) than it was on the previous frame to register as an L-cancel. If you move the button outward, or click it in, and not in the window to L-cancel correctly, there will be a 20 frame (1/3 sec) window that that button can't be used to l-cancel in. z aslo works to l-cancel, but needs to be pushed in all the way. Now that you know physically how to do it, here's the timing. You need to l-cancel within 6 frames (1/10 sec) before touching the ground out of an aerial. Usually, you will shine after l-cancelling, and it will appear to come out almost immediately (also preventing shield grabbing, so if they try to grab you and the get shined, you probably did it right). Once you shine them, the traditional up-down combo is an option. This involves dairing them after a shine, fast falling, and shining again. Repeat as necessary.

Scotu beat me to the punch!

If you really want to see the L-Cancel in action, I'd suggest looking at Link. L-Canceling does work the same way for all characters if they perform an aerial attack, but it's certainly more noticeable with Link's Down+A since his recovery time on that move is huge. If you don't L-Cancel it properly, he'll spend half a second pulling the sword out of the ground rather than recovering almost instantaneously with a successful cancel.

For faster characters like Fox or Falco, you might not see whether you L-Canceled successfully or not just by looking at them as their recoveries are already very good. It becomes noticeable that you L-Canceled successfully if, after executing an attack such as the shffl'd drill kick with Fox, you manage to immediately pull off another attack upon landing such as a shine or grab before your foe has a chance to respond. If you execute the drill kick and you don't L-Cancel, they will have more than enough time to put the hurt on you as you slowly recover, and you will have no time to execute a follow-up move. Proof of how a few extra frames of animation can make such a difference.

Obsessive-compulsiveness? Copy-pasting? Family of five?

Oh, that was rhetorical.

More on-topic, I hope this has been of help, alpha. Good luck.
