so as a big mistake i bought a gamestop gamecube controller (just as some help do not buy that one) so i am wondering is there a best controller that you guys recommend for project m (or smash in general)

The official Nintendo Gamecube controller is my personal choice for every smash game (except 64). It's generally regarded as the best controller for the game. The Wii U is even getting an official adapter for it.
That being said, just try out different controllers and see which one you like more. I'd stay away from 3rd party ones though. While there are definitely some good ones out there, most of them don't really compare to the official ones.

It's up to your personal preference. That said, just because everyone uses one type of controller, doesn't mean that it's the best for you. I personally use Wiimote+Nunchuck because the inputs just flow naturally for me. I can't get my head wrapped around the GC controls at a high level.
