I've devoted hours each day for the last 2 years playing this god awful game. I live with 5 guys who also have wasted their time playing this game. However we've all become pretty good and have learned the tricks to playing our characters. The main characters played are Yoshi (me), while they are a combination of Pikachu, Ness, and Kirby. We've all become good with the tricks of playing the characters; using combo's, double jump canceling, etc. However one of the Ness players has found our biggest weakness, all he does is grab and surprisingly it works well. He throws and just waits for you to come back where he proceeds to grab and throw you again and again. If you attack, its a block then right into a grab. This is honestly the most infuriating thing i've ever encountered with the game (and i get caught in Ness's double jump cancel which there is no way to get out of unless he slips up)

My defense against the grabbing is mainly is to land and put him in an egg and slowly beat him that way. However it's pathetic, 4 of us have learned to play the game and he's undone everything just by using a grab.

Any strategy against Ness and grabbing?

Ness's grab has bad range and has some ending lag. Predict when he is going to grab and then up tilt or DJC into combos.

Or just DJC back air/nair repeatedly or use down tilts as they have more range than ness's grab.

If your wondering for the other guys. the pikachu just needs to space aerials correctly and the kirby just needs to up tilt to prevent the grabs.

short hop arials. seriously, just do z cancelled short hopped arials (a button attacks). or djc it if you want, that's even better. land your arials behind him so he can't grab you

First sentence made me think this was a troll thread. Anyways, if you're hitting his shield and he ends up shield grabbing you you're ALL doing it wrong. Hitting ness's shield should automatically mean a grab at the very least if not a shield breaker or combo. Sounds to me like that Ness player keeps baiting you all into attacking him while he just dashes away and then dashes back and grabs you, so stop falling for that dumb ****. If you can predict him using utilts, then bait him back into whiffing one so you can punish him. If he starts spamming DJC as an approach then you can easily outspace him with yoshi's fair and bair since ness is more immobile when he's DJCing. If you can land a dash attack on him at the correct percentage, you can just keep dash attacking him all the way to the edge.

We can't really help you much more than this without video footage, since there's no way in hell yoshi/pika/kirby should be losing in approach to a ness that spams grab. So post some videos of your matches.

Honest to God, not a troll thread. I'm in college and for some odd reason we ended up playing N64 to kill time but now its at the point where we play way too much.

Main thing to remember about grabs in situations like this: the defending player can only shield grab in front of him. So try dancing around the Ness player with fast characters like Fox and Pikachu and attacking from behind.

Alternatively, use moves that keep you out of Ness's grab range. Stuff like Kirby's nair and Pika's uair will do the trick.

grabspam can be pretty tough to counter, but with ness it ain't too hard.

Back when I still had trouble against really spammy grabbers (this was against DK) the only thing that really worked at first was just learning to approach with aerial attacks more. I don't really play yoshi at all, but if your pikachu friend will just z-cancel some shorthop back-airs, or if your kirby dude will utilt spam or approach with forward air, they should be fine. A really @$$hole way to deal with this would be to pull a DK (if you know how to play him at all) and beat the little nub at his own game (DK's grabs have much, much more range than ness' do.) But yeah, like Fireblaster said, post vids and the 1337 people can help you more.
