NOTE: I'm pretty new to the community and smashboards. I didn't really start paying attention to the community until the nintendo/evo/charity ordeal a while back (and of course, the doc helped renew that interest). So if this topic has been brought up repeatedly, needs to be in different forum, or I am just way off-base with my statements, forgive my ignorance. Also I'm not excluding other big tournaments like Pound, ROM, Genesis, etc. but due to my lack of familiarity with their size/prestige in the community I limited my examples to Evo, MLG, and Apex.
Like with majors in Golf and Tennis, I would imagine that the smashboards rankings system (or any other rankings system that may exist) doesn't really matter much to pros/community members compared to the results of Evo, Apex, and now the resurrection of MLG. I was just curious if there's ever been an attempt to formally recognize these results on smashboards or anywhere else. What do I mean? A specific section for these type of events for each year.
I.E. Apex Winners by year, Evo winners by year, MLG winners by year, etc. All of which would be on the rankings section of smashboards(or maybe even its own tab). Or perhaps a hall of fame type of section listing the totals for players who have the most victories, top 5 finishes, etc. in national/major tournaments.
I understand that depending on the year, the amount of entrants or specifications that would make a tournament a "major" would be varied (based on the size of the community for said year, and tournaments that did or did not exist), which creates complications for giving them formal recognition compared to wimbledon, the masters, or something like that. So of course there would be specific criteria needed for what constitutes a "major" or "national" for that section. It just kind of irks me that someone who is curious about the community (and doesn't really know much about the big tournaments) is going to naturally gravitate to the rankings page and therefore conclude that M2k is the best in melee right now despite not winning the most prestigious tourneys recently. I don't have a problem with the rankings themselves, but they need to be supplemented with the list of current and past champions just like every other sport that has rankings.
A more accessible way to view the winners of the nationals/majors would be beneficial to the community rather than digging up results threads. It would also provide more hype for those events, because people new to the community would be able to understand more explicitly that "hey this is a big deal" and the winners are at the top of the mountain so-to-speak. It would also be a cool thing for commentators to bring into the mix, because frankly there aren't really stats in melee and as trivial as something like a numbered record may seem, everyone knows Jordan's 6 rings, Nicholson's 18 major wins, etc. I don't have a clue how many "major" or "national" tourneys ken, m2k, Mango, etc. have won and that type of thing is never really mentioned aside from commentators occasional references to specific tournaments.
Anyway, just wanted to throw my thoughts in there as someone who is simply a fan of the competitive scene. Feel free to correct any mistakes I made or point me to a link where what I'm describing exists.
edit: also I kept throwing around the word "national" but realize that the three tournaments I mentioned would be considered "international" via the player entrants. Anyway, the word "major" might be a bit more fitting.
