Every time I try shffling Nairs I always land RIGHT in front of the person I'm fighting. It seems like no matter what I do, even against a motionless player, I can't space N air if the opponent is shielding. Any advice?

Don't do aerials directly into opponents shields. You can try to l-cancel and immediately sidestep the expected shield grab, but that won't always work. Don't fastfall the nair and you may be able to end up behind them.

Maybe try practicing retreating Nairs.
