I'm not sure if it's just for smash but it doesn't save lol
for example, if i beat the game and unlock everyone, turn it off and turn it back on again they are gone and i have to beat it again to use the secret characters.

Anybody know what the problem is?

1. no i'm not gonna have it on 24/7

Wait, N64 games uses battery backed save data? I thought they got rid of that after SNES games and stuck to Flash Memory.

Yeh, I'm pretty sure they stuck to Flash Memory. Try blowing in the cartraidge, sometimes makes the file come back [but if it's everytime it dies... >_>].

EDIT:
Wikipedia N64 said:
Some of the cartridges included internal EEPROM or battery-backed-up RAM for saved game storage.
... hug.

Should have used EEPROM. Means if it is battery backed, one day all SSB64's will be dead unless you change the battery.

EDIT 2:
Maybe this will help: http://www.nintendorepairshop.com/shopexd.asp?id=496

I dunno if it'll work. 8 bucks and comes with battery.

This happened to my copy of Ocarina of Time, which sucked. Luckily that game is available on a few other platforms (Gamecube, Wii VC, Emulator) and isn't a game you really need to be playing on the original console, unlike Smash 64.

Here's to all those Smash cartridges hopefully holding out for as long as technically possible!

This is so sad...but then, maybe if all smash64's die out, we can all move on to the wii version and stop using those **** n64 joysticks.

I had this problem with my smash cartridge once. I just got a gameshark and used that for a while and would leave my N64 On a lot lol. After behing left on a while it fixed itself somehow..

My friend dropped his copy of SSB and all of his save data was magically erased.

The day before he was going to donate it to me. :O

So I had to unlock everything myself...and uhh...it works fine now. O_o

I think that you can replace the battery, but it might require a bit of soldering. The batteries are fairly common watch batteries, so they aren't hard to get ahold of.

That is, if N64 carts are similar to SNES carts in this regard.

Thank god we have Project64k and Mupen64k. If not for them, this game would be probably dead, sadly
