Hey SmashBoards, on the words of James Chen: How is everybody going?

I just wanted to start this thread with the goal of promoting some discussion about the current ruleset for Sm4sh at EVO2015. To start off this conversation I would like to point out my opinions about the three main things going on right now: The Stages, The Customs, and finally The Time.

First, when it comes to stages, there has been a great uproar about the licensing issues involving Big N and music on some stages that would make it impossible to include the stage on the tournament. While yes. this does make me sad because I'm always in for the hype and diversity, I can see why some stages would not be playable. The reason I see behind that is that the music, every single track, is in fact an effective part of the stage. Don't deny it, you have choosen the Ring just because of the amazing song about someone stealing bikes (JK) or the hype of Willy's Castle Theme.

The fact of matter here is: Some songs, such as the aforementioned Megaman theme, or the Tetris song that plays in some stages, and other 3rd party arrangements are licensed for use under some circunstances that do not include streaming or tournament usage. You can weight in that "You can just turn the sound off", however while that might seem like an appropriate solution, it is not quite like that. I am by no means an expert in Law stuff, but I believe that at least in part (a very small part) those 3rd parties own that stage. The music may not playing there, but the licensing for playing it there IS. I am not saying that Tetris Company (or whatever they're called) will sue Nintendo because EVO grand finals is streaming a stage that COULD play their song. I am not saying that if they sued they would win anything either. What I am saying is that the CAN sue under some clause, and even though it would lead to nothing, it would on the best case cause some attorney fees. So in that regard, just to avoid annoyances I guess they opted out to just let those stages go for now.

Next, I wish to tackle the Customs issue. Just to get this out of the way: HYPE! Yes, as I said before, I'm totally in for diversity and I love the idea of bringing this to the game. Some may say this will break the game, but really, how many of you have complained about diddy kong right now? How many of you complained about Bowsercide on the early 3DS days? Heck, how many have complained about Little Mac? Customs will not break the game (they can, off course, I don't have such deep understanding of everything to say that it is impossible) but will instead bring new tools to the table. Weak characters will have a fighting chance, strong characters will face new competition, creativity will be even more into play, it is just an overall great idea to try out.

Still on the subject of Customs, the other big thing are Mii fighters. While I'm totally pro Mii fighter on tournaments, I am not capable of seeing their true potential. It has come to my knowledge that they can change stuff like height and width (?) and I am not very familiar with those options yet, I will do more research on that to stablish an opinion. But feel free to post your thoughs on that below.

Finally, the timer issue. Mr. Wizard said on an interview that the reasoning behind the timer is the online play. While I think that is somehow a valid point to bring, since a LOT of people's only way of practcing is for glory mode online, on a high level tournament play that might not be the case at all. Time constraints for the whole tournament were mentioned as well, in the way I see it it could be possible to run pools with 2s5min and move on to 3s8min after that, but I'm pretty sure that is not a very good idea. I want to hear everybody else's opinion on that as well, mainly those with tournament experience, what do you think about 2s5min matches?

That's all I have to say for now, please feel free to show your opinons but be respectful with me and everybody else.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you all have to say, and HYPED for EVO like every year

Peace
