My Terrible Tap Jump Habit

Ever since I've played smash, I've used tap jump the whole time because I didn't care, but I honestly think its necessary for me to switch to X for jumping.
I've tried to switch many times, and I'm not not able to get used to it, any suggestions?

I honestly think that if there were a time for tap jump to be okay (albeit not the best option but) it would be now. Now that the advance mechanics like wavedashing, wave landing and just general directional airdodging are a thing of the past, there is less of a downside besides less precise jumps and I suppose being able to up tilt more easily when its disabled.
But if you're really wanting to destroy the habit, just turn it off in the controller options. Its a sort of kill or be killed way of dealing with the issue but if you spend a few days really playing and forcing yourself to get used to it, it'll work.

I think it boils down to preference. Personally i use X to jump and turn off tap jump. I find that i sometimes accidentally jump or ill jump higher than i wanted to if I use tap jump.

That and i find that quickly skimming my finger across X and down onto A makes it easy to do quick short hop nairs and fairs.

Ive always kind of favored button jumping personally since i accidentally jump too much with tap jump, so i cant really gove any ideas about how to make your adjusting period easier. But like with anything, I'd probably say just to play with button jumping on a lot. It may take some getting used to but depending on how much smash you play it shouldn't take too long to get comfortable with it and decide if you like it.

There is an advantage to tap jump: up-B and up smash directly from shielding are easier if you have it on (As long as you use the stick for smashing in that case). Note you can still do this with other buttons but then you have to trigger it intentionally.

The disadvantages are accidentally using your second jump when trying to uair and occasional jumps when you mean to tilt.

My advice is just to play Classic/All-Star with Tap Jump off and don't give up if you get frustrated. When it comes to learning new controls, it just takes patience and perseverance. Switching to a new controller, switching your control settings, switching buttons... all it takes is time. I've switched controllers twice and messed with my settings numerous times to improve my control output, all with success!

As for Tap Jump itself, I personally would keep it off 99% of the time. If you're playing a character that relies on their up tilts (which is a lot of characters. :4mario:, :4pikachu:, :4megaman:, :4myfriends: are a few I can think off the top of my head), you'll want Tap Jump off, while if you're playing a character that doesn't rely on their up tilt too much, like :4ganondorf:, it could be beneficial to keep it on. Generally, though, every character has some use for their up tilt, and you definitely don't want that option to go away.
