My struggle in Melee

So I've been playing Melee since September (not including the old school "play as a party game" days), and I've been a part of my local scene since about November (so playing in locals on and off for about 4 months). I really like my scene and have made some good friends through it, and this has made me appreciate Melee as a competitive game much more than other competitive scenes I've been a part of in the past(Halo 3, SC2, etc.).

But, my problem with Melee is that I've just really struggled to find a character to main.

Now I don't say this as somebody who is super new to Melee and has just watched some random videos online and thought, "Whoa, Capt. Falcon is amazing! I wanna play him!" I've put hours and days into training, playing friendlies, and playing in tournaments with: Ganondorf, Young Link, Puff, Captain Falcon, Pikachu, Luigi, Yoshi, Marth, Ice Climbers, Samus, and a bit with Fox and Falco. Now I've also played the rest of the cast a decent amount and found that I just really don't like how they play, or that one or more of their limiting factors were just too much for me to want to delve further into that character. That's not to say that the ones that I have tried out don't have their limitations, but I don't mind their limitations as much as I do the others that I didn't mention.

I like to play Melee for fun, but I also really want to improve my game. In the past 4 months I've learned to wavedash and can do so crisply 9/10 times with almost every character, I can shield drop, waveland, ledge dash, tech, DI, etc. I've learned the game, although I have so much more to learn, and feel like I have a pretty good grasp on it. But I know that I need to pick a main character and learn the ins and outs of said character to really get better and make a name for myself. I can usually get top 8 out of 32+ entrants at locals, but that's not very satisfying anymore. I enjoy being aggressive more than defensive, although I usually have a balanced playstyle, but I just haven't really found a character that "fits" and that I really enjoy playing. That could be due to a number of reasons, but whatever.

It's gotten to the point that I'm just downright depressed about it and my desire to play Melee is waning due to not really having a character that I've been able to "click" with to further myself in the game. I don't really know what I'm asking for, but just any and all input helps. Don't have anywhere else to turn to at this point.

Maybe Melee just not for you?

Try Project M or even some of the newer Smash games. More variety, you're sure to find a character you gravitate toward. Not only that but newer game, newer meta. You can feel like you're closer to getting in on the ground floor.

You've been playing for only 4 months and you can reliably place top 8/32 and you're upset? Maybe this is some kind of competitive spirit, but maybe you could just enjoy your fast success

Play 1 of the tournament viable 8 (Fox, Falco, Sheik, Jigglypuff, Marth, Peach, Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon). They're capable of simply doing things in competitive play. Since you like aggro play, Fox and Falco might fit you best. It can take a long time (like a year) for some to find their best character

Didn't mean to sound ungrateful or that I'm just shrugging off my tournament results. I'm happy and grateful with my improvement and where I've gotten to already, but I just really wish that there was a character that I could connect with and get good with. Le sigh. I've kind of learned that the two aspects I enjoy most in Melee are A) baiting out responses from opponents and punishing them accordingly, and B) edgeguarding/gimping. This kind of draws me to pikachu/sheik, but I'm not sure really.

Just go with Shiek, she pretty much a God tier character in this game. No real unfavorable matchups, fun to play and learn. Sexy winning pose.

Ok what's next can we help you pick a girlfriend or maybe what kind of job you want when you grow up :pimp:I keed I KEED!
