Just two sonnets I wrote a while back. I consciously aimed to imitate Shakespeare in language and format, although in a few cases my iambic meter is off a bit. I mainly aim to share these if you find them interesting, but feel free to critique. Without further ado.

The Prize

In ev'ry lonely land from sea to sea,
Wherein men live to seek their worldly prize,
The wealth of nations that has made them free
Has now begun to dwindle in their eyes.
Upon which sight men weep and women wail,
And say, "What deeds of ours merit this curse?"
The answers of their wisest men all fail
As man sets stock within his shrinking purse.
This tattered earth in winter of despair
Now decides that "We must remain the course—
For summer will come—"; at this hope they stare
For in their path think not they of remorse.
Those from elsewhere remark upon the ire
That such great greed destroys the land with fire.

Paths

When in myself the deepest councils gath'r
For the decisions of how 'tis I feel
I would that I could be myself, but rath'r
I am compelled to be what is not real.
While those who know me might see outward views,
None but myself can know all that I am.
And so I set my eye on whom I choose,
And live by mine own self-anointed plan.
Betimes I feel ill at ease, but my state
Is that as such that naught shall ruin my goals.
I confidently march to Heaven's gate,
Arr'ving afore the hour when the bell tolls.
My path is known to none but I alone,
Followed by plan until I reach my home.
