With SSB4 I will have a fairly good start point for having a clean slate to build off of.

In Melee, one of my biggest flaws was that i played too many different characters. This caused my execution with one character to drop in favor of another. This was very problematic in the long run. it pushed me to swap characters to alleviate flaws as opposed to learning to overcome them.

As such I plan to play Lucina and only Lucina. I'm hoping that logging the amount of time i played into one character will force me to adapt to her weaknesses and grow from them. as opposed to merely swapping to another character to avoid having to contend with them in a particular match up.

Another flaw in my method of playing was that I didn't broaden my opponent spectrum enough. For the most part I played against 2 people. with a few others randomly being played against. this. doesnt teach me how to play the character but teaches me how to play against the opposing player. (Smooth criminal.... stupid shiek....)

I am almost always going to be at the VSGC In pompano beach coming October. I hope to play as many different people and characters as possible.

My question to the smash boards community is.

- What advice could you give to help a player improve?

- What is your plan to improve your gameplay?

1. Use your brain. Predict the obvious. Don't approach a player guns blazing.

2. Play online so I get used to other peoples playstyles.

Also, if you are going in tournaments then you might want at least one other character for a counterpick. I imagine tourney matches like this: If you lose the match, look back and see what you did wrong compared to right. If the ratio of wrong to right is 2:1 then you would probably want to pick your other character. The thing about picking another character is you don't know how you will fair with this one so you are essentially making a gamble, where as you could seek room for improvement with the other character you lost with. You could make assumptions on what moves with your counterpick could counteract the enemy players, but those are just assumptions.

If you won, be aware of the other player becoming more adaptable to your playstyle.

I see thanks for the input I was considering Fist Mii fighter for a second character if that was the most apropos way to improve.

I've always just played smash with the same close group of 4 friends that I have. Now that we're all older (23-24), working, and don't live in the same neighborhood, I'm going to be attending tournaments. I've never been, but it will be great to watch and/or take part in some. I'm also thankful that we have an online mode, so that we can play against other people whenever we want.

Supposedly, I've heard that counter picking may be a big thing in this smash, so it may be a good idea to "main" a couple of different characters. I've picked 3 different ones that I want to try out and spend a lot of time practicing with.

Ultimately though, Ill just play random characters til I find a couple that feel right...

If you want specific, nuanced advice, I'd say:

1) Pick up a main and a secondary. Learn them both inside and out.
2) Understand how the Smash 4 engine functions.
3) Adopt both an offensive and defensive style. Make sure both can be modified accordingly, as required by the match-up you're in.

But in terms of broad, general advice:

1) Play as many people as possible. Each person you play will make you challenge a different perspective of how the character you're going against should be played.
2) Be in a competitive setting often. Go to tournaments, meet people, challenge people, and have fun.
3) Plan out your steps for development in Smash 4. Know what you need to improve on, what you're good at, and what you don't know. Be enterprising, try out new things, and invest in yourself.

And then finally:

Don't let Smash 4 get in the way of actual priorities in life. School, family, relationships, friends, your health, all demand a share of your time alongside Smash. Stay on top of things and chances are, your performance in Smash will be better. Stress can really hurt your output in this game.

Have fun with it man :)

If I have one thing to address, it would be the statement of playing only one character. Knowledge of what your opponents are capable of is perhaps more important than the knowledge of what your own character can do, you'll need to understand more than just Lucina to be truly good. In fact, there are some top tier players that advocate that players cannot be the best only playing one character, that they need to use a second or third to cover their weaknesses, a sentiment I agree with. Being perfectly proficient with one character is great, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with having one best character (a main), by a large margin even, but neglecting the others will not help you in the long run.

Before u even get a main play everyone and learn their strength and weaknesses. And apply what you know when facing a opponent. Also it's a really good idea to get a training buddy u can grow with who's some what around your skill level and is also trying to improve.
