Namely in the fashion that i put SD cards and the like and it does nothing not even turn on the light that's suppose to go on when you put something in. The reader came with the computer in 2001 and had to receive a new harddrive in 2007 and has been never used until this year.

Help and advice on how to fix it without forking money over to a repair man or into a new reader is appreciated.

What kind of SD cards are you using? What capacity are they?

An old reader won't support SDHC, so if we're talking about something >= 2GB, you probably need a new reader.

Is it built in to your computer? And you've never used it before?

Any number of things might be wrong with it if you've never used it. Simple solutions? The power cable might not be connected. The data cable might not be connected. (Either could have been disconnected when the new hard drive was installed, potentially, or never connected in the first place.)

In any event, USB card readers are cheap and they'll read high capacity cards that an old reader won't (even a non-SDHC 2GB card can cause issues with some older readers). It might be easiest to just pick one of those up, or order one online.
